Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Refused to Stay Dead

By morning, the story had reached every major news outlet.
An unknown source had leaked photographs of Vanessa's pregnancy cushion.
The fake ultrasound.
The hospital records.
And pieces of the security footage.
The Grand Regent was surrounded by reporters.
The Whitmore family name appeared on every television screen.
But the person missing from the coverage was Eleanor.
Alexander had refused to reveal her location until the police could guarantee her safety.
Maya insisted that was the right decision.
“Right now, she is evidence.”
Alexander looked at her.
“She is my wife.”
“She is both.”
He accepted that.
Then Vanessa asked to see Eleanor.
At first, Alexander refused.
But Eleanor agreed.
The meeting took place in a secure hospital room.
Vanessa entered in tears.
Eleanor looked at her for a long time.
“You knew.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Losing everything.”
Eleanor's expression softened slightly.
“That fear cost you everything anyway.”
Vanessa cried.
“I never wanted you dead.”
“But you knew they were keeping me.”
“Yes.”
“You let me stay there.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa whispered:
“I thought if you returned, Alexander would hate me.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“He would have forgiven you if you had told him the truth.”
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn't believe that.”
Eleanor reached toward her.
“You should have.”
Vanessa began crying harder.
“I lost the baby.”
“I know.”
“I thought pretending would keep me safe.”
“It didn't.”
“I know.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Then tell the police everything.”
Vanessa looked up.
“Will you forgive me?”
Eleanor thought about it.
“Not today.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“But perhaps someday.”
The conversation gave investigators a major breakthrough.
Vanessa revealed where Edward had hidden financial documents.
She also admitted that Julian had arranged the fake medical reports.
Dr. Reed eventually cooperated too.
He described the secret clinic.
The illegal medical procedures.
The transportation of Eleanor.
The threats.
Everything.
With Vanessa's testimony, the conspiracy became much clearer.
Edward had been the mastermind.
Julian the principal collaborator.
Cynthia the financial facilitator.
Dr. Reed the medical accomplice.
And Vanessa the false heir.
But there was one more name.
The name nobody expected.
Benjamin Cole.
The family attorney.
He had inserted the hidden trust clause.
He had modified the guardianship language.
And he had helped establish the fake foundation.
Maya confronted him.
He initially denied everything.
Then she placed the documents on the table.
“Your signature is on all of them.”
Benjamin looked at the papers.
Then sighed.
“I thought I was protecting the family.”
Maya laughed coldly.
“You were protecting yourself.”
He eventually confessed.
Edward had paid him for years.
He had been the architect of the legal strategy.
He knew exactly how to manipulate the trust.
The case was now complete.
But Edward was still missing.
And he still had access to millions.
Then an email arrived.
It was addressed to Alexander.
You have always been the weak one.
Your father should have chosen Julian.
But the family made a mistake.
I will correct it tonight.
Attached was a photograph.
A road.
A warehouse.
And a timestamp.
Alexander looked at Maya.
“Where is that?”
She recognized it.
“Your old shipping terminal.”
The same terminal where Whitmore Holdings stored confidential documents.
And the place where the original trust records were archived.
Edward was going there.
If he reached those records, he could destroy the final evidence.
Alexander stood.
“We go now.”
Eleanor grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Let the police handle it.”
He hesitated.
May you like
Then nodded.
For the first time, he understood that surviving did not mean doing everything himself.
