Chapter 9 - The Pantry Camera

The backup security server was hidden behind a false panel in the pantry.Priya found it by tapping the wall while Noah held a flashlight. The device was old, dusty, and still warm."Why would someone hide it here?" Julian asked."Because the pantry is the one place Mrs. Mercer never searched," Priya said."Why?""She hates the smell of flour."Noah connected the server to his laptop. Hundreds of files appeared, most labeled by date. The footage from the kitchen was intact for eleven years. The footage from the service corridor had been deleted in sections, but not permanently.Lila watched over his shoulder."Can you restore it?""Maybe.""Maybe is good."The first recovered file showed Celia and Mara in the pantry two years earlier. Celia stood beside a shelf of preserves, holding an envelope."You will work the Christmas luncheon," Celia said."My doctor says I need rest.""Your doctor does not know what I know.""I have paid back every cent.""You could never pay back the cost of keeping this quiet.""You said the money was for Naomi.""And did Naomi thank you?"Mara sat on a stool. "Leave her out of this.""Then stop pretending you have choices."The footage ended.Another showed Celia handing Mara a newspaper clipping. The headline concerned a Mercer's charity audit."One phone call," Celia said, "and every reporter in Chicago will know you sold your infant.""I did not sell him.""The paperwork says otherwise."Julian turned away from the screen. He had spent years believing cruelty required raised voices. Celia's calm was worse. She could reduce a woman's life to a sentence, then fold the sentence into an envelope.Priya placed a hand on his shoulder. "You don't have to watch all of it.""Yes, I do."The footage showed Celia entering Mara's room with the sapphire brooch. It showed Grant standing in the hall during the blackout. It showed him taking the bank draft from Julian's hand. The missing ledger appeared in a later file. Grant carried it from the basement storage room to the study."He took it," Julian said."And Celia knew," Lila answered.Noah paused the video."There is one more file."The image showed Grant and Celia in the pantry three nights earlier."You said the trust clause was secure," Grant said."It is.""The biological heir has to approve the foundation transfer.""Julian will sign when the scandal makes him desperate.""What if he finds out about the offshore accounts?""He won't. You designed the reports.""I moved the money because you told me to.""You moved it because you were in debt."Grant gripped the counter. "You promised me a place in the foundation.""I promised you employment.""You promised me a future.""You should have been born into one."Grant raised his hand, but did not strike her. The image froze on the moment of his hesitation.Mara watched from the doorway."He looks like his father," she said."Arthur?" Lila asked."The same anger. The same belief that a person could be cornered until surrender looked like consent."Julian called Grant. He answered on the fourth ring. "What do you want?""Meet me at the foundation.""No.""Then I send the recordings to the board."Silence."You wouldn't," Grant said."You taught me how evidence works.""Celia is the one who used you.""You helped her.""I helped myself.""Come to the office."Grant arrived forty minutes later. He looked older than he had that morning.Margaret Sloan, the board chair, sat in the conference room with two attorneys. Diane sat beside her. Naomi and Mara waited in the hall.Julian placed the recordings on the screen.Grant watched himself take the bank draft."That was not theft," he said. "I was preserving evidence.""You concealed it.""Celia told me to.""You planted the brooch.""She asked me to.""Did she ask you to move money from the foundation?"Grant's mouth tightened.Margaret leaned forward. "Answer him.""The transfers were authorized.""The hospital in Belize closed twelve years ago," Diane said."The project continued through a partner.""Name the partner."Grant had no answer. The attorneys requested access to his office and devices. He refused until Margaret warned him that the refusal itself would be reported to law enforcement. At last, he placed his phone on the table."Celia has copies of everything," he said. "If you take me down, she will release the records."Julian stared at him. "What records?"Grant looked toward the hall, where Mara stood."The original birth certificate," he said. "And the document that proves Victor Mercer paid to erase her."Mara held her breath."Where are they?" Lila asked."Celia's bedroom safe."Julian went still.Grant leaned back. "You want the truth? You should ask what your wife planned to do with it."That night, Celia's bedroom safe was empty. The combination had been changed. The metal door showed fresh scratches around the lock.On the dressing table lay a card in Grant's handwriting. You made me your witness. Now witness what I do.Celia read it once and tore it in half. Then she looked at Julian standing in the doorway."Grant has gone mad," she said."Maybe he has.""You cannot believe him.""I believe the cameras.""You think those recordings will save you?""No," Julian said. "The truth might."Celia's hand closed around the torn card."Truth is not a home," she said."Neither is this."
