Chapter 4 - The First Envelope

Lila Torres worked from a rented office above a bakery on Sheridan Road. The room smelled of cinnamon, old paper, and the lake after rain. She spread the documents across a metal desk while Julian sat opposite her and Mara sat near the window. Diane had declined to come. She claimed she needed time, but Julian suspected she needed distance from the Mercer name."This payment was made three days after your birth," Lila said. She tapped a photocopy of a bank draft. The amount was thirty-five thousand dollars, a fortune in 1982. The purchaser was Victor Mercer. The recipient was listed as St. Agnes Family Services."That agency closed in 1991," Julian said."Its records were transferred twice. The last archive was destroyed in a flood.""Convenient.""Possibly. But the payment itself is real."Mara stared at the draft. "I never saw that money.""The relinquishment form says you received five thousand," Lila said."I received nothing.""Then someone took it."Julian looked down at the signature. The name Mara Quinn was written in a hand she recognized but did not remember using."That isn't my signature," she said.Lila examined the page. "It may have been copied from another document. The ink is different from the date.""Can you prove forgery?""Not yet. I need the original."The bakery door below opened, and a bell chimed. For an instant, Mara was back at St. Agnes, hearing the maternity ward door close behind the woman who had carried her son away."Tell me about the night before," Lila said.Mara looked at Julian. "You don't have to hear this.""I do.""I had fever. My sister was gone. Naomi was staying with a neighbor. A hospital administrator came to my bed and said there had been complications.""What complications?""He said you had stopped breathing."Julian's face went rigid."He showed me a sheet with a time written on it," Mara continued. "I couldn't read it clearly. I was frightened. The next morning, Arthur Bell came with a woman who called herself Mrs. Mercer.""My mother," Julian said."She held you. She was crying.""Did she know you were alive?""She knew I was alive. She knew you were alive. She said the arrangement would save all of us."Lila wrote something down."What arrangement?""Arthur said Victor would make sure Naomi was safe if I surrendered you. He told me your father wanted a son and would give you the life I could not.""And Naomi?""They promised money for her care."Julian pushed back from the desk."They used your daughter to take me.""Yes."He walked to the window. On the street below, people carried paper bags and umbrellas, moving through ordinary lives. He wondered whether any of them had been purchased before they could speak.Lila's phone buzzed."It's Priya," she said. She answered, listened, and put the call on speaker.Priya's voice was tight. "Mrs. Mercer is going through the staff files.""Why?" Julian asked."She says she is reorganizing personnel. She removed Mara's original employment application.""Can you stop her?""I already copied it.""Where are you?""In the laundry room. Noah is with me."Noah's voice came faintly through the phone. "She also took the camera logs."Lila leaned closer. "Camera logs from where?""The service corridor," Priya said. "There were gaps on the dates Mara was threatened."Julian felt cold. "Who installed those cameras?""Your father did," Priya said. "After the silver was stolen in 2011.""I didn't know.""Celia did."The call ended.Lila took a fresh folder from her case. "You need to decide whether you want this handled quietly.""No.""Publicly?""Truthfully.""Those are not always the same thing."Mara looked at him. "If you expose this, people will say I used you.""They can say whatever they want.""They will say I was greedy.""They already say that. Celia has been saying it for eleven years.""And your family?""My family can decide whether it wants to be honest."That evening, Julian returned to Haverford with Lila's copy of the bank draft in his coat pocket. Celia was hosting Grant Bell in the study. Grant was a broad-shouldered man with silver hair and a smile that never reached his eyes."You should have called," Celia said."I live here."Grant rose. "Julian, I was just leaving.""Stay."Grant's smile faded. "I have a board call.""Arthur Bell was your father."Grant did not move.Celia said, "This is harassment.""Was he the adoption broker?""I don't know what you're talking about," Grant said.Julian removed the bank draft. "He received thirty-five thousand dollars from Victor Mercer after my birth."Grant looked at the document, then at Celia. That glance was brief, but Lila had taught Julian to notice brief things."You knew," Julian said."I knew there had been an adoption," Grant answered. "I did not arrange it.""But your father did.""He handled family services.""And my wife?"Grant's gaze shifted again.Celia stepped between them. "Enough. This conversation is over."Julian held up the draft. "Where is the ledger?"Grant's face changed. Not fear. Recognition. He knew exactly which ledger Julian meant. Before anyone could speak, the study lights went out.The room filled with darkness and the sound of a lock turning somewhere inside the wall. When the lights came back, the bank draft was gone from Julian's hand.
