Chapter 7 - The Locked Study

The safe-deposit box was registered at a private bank in downtown Chicago. The key opened a metal compartment containing three items: a cassette tape, a yellowed hospital bracelet, and a letter addressed to Eleanor Mercer. There were no adoption records.Julian stared at the empty compartment. "Someone got here first."Lila examined the dust along the back wall. "Recently."Diane held the letter. "This is Mother's handwriting.""Read it," Julian said. She opened the envelope.Victor, I know what you did. I know the boy's mother was told he died. You said the agency handled everything, but I found the receipt in your desk. I will not raise our son on a lie. If you cannot tell him, I will. I only need time to understand how to undo the harm. The letter ended there."She knew," Diane whispered.Julian took it from her. "She knew after the adoption.""She planned to tell you.""But she didn't.""Maybe Father stopped her."Lila lifted the cassette. "We need something to play this."At Haverford, they found an old tape recorder in Victor's study. The machine hissed before a man's voice filled the room.Victor Mercer sounded younger than Julian remembered, but the authority was the same.Arthur, the girl is asking questions. Keep her away from the hospital records. If Eleanor learns the full arrangement, she will make a scene. The boy is ours now. Do what you must. The tape clicked.Julian closed his eyes.Another voice followed. Arthur Bell. The mother signed. The daughter is being monitored. The nurse wants more money.Victor said, "Pay her once. After that, she gets nothing."The recording ended.Naomi stood near the fireplace, her arms wrapped around herself. "The daughter is me."Mara nodded."They monitored me?""I didn't know.""You knew they threatened me.""I knew Arthur said he could take you from my sister.""That isn't the same thing.""No."Julian turned to Lila. "Can we use this?""It may be challenged. We need chain of custody and authentication.""The bank held it.""The bank held a box. We need to prove who placed the tape there and that it has not been altered.""Then we prove it."The locked study became the center of the investigation. Victor's desk held old calendars, foundation minutes, and a brass keyring with one missing key. A hidden panel behind the bookshelves contained tax returns, but no ledger.Priya joined the search."There is a room beneath the west staircase," she said.Julian looked at her. "A basement?""A storage room. Mr. Mercer kept wine there before the renovation.""Why didn't you mention it?""Because Mrs. Mercer told the staff it was off limits."The room had no windows and smelled of damp stone. Shelves held Christmas decorations, broken lamps, and six locked trunks. One trunk contained old menus from Mercer parties. Another held newspapers. The third had been emptied recently. On the floor, Mara found a torn strip of black leather."The ledger cover," she said.Lila photographed it.Behind a stack of boxes, Noah discovered a loose stone. Beneath it was a narrow metal case.Inside lay photocopies of foundation transfers. More than two million dollars had moved from the Mercer Children's Initiative into three companies in the Cayman Islands. The companies shared an address with a consulting firm owned by Grant Bell.Julian looked at the pages. "How long?""At least four years," Lila said."Celia signed these approvals.""Her signature is on all of them."Priya's face tightened. "She always said the consulting fees were for overseas medical projects.""Were they?""I don't know."Lila pointed to a line item. "One project is listed as a hospital in Belize. It closed twelve years ago."Julian sat on an overturned crate. The secret had begun with a baby. Now it reached into charities, family trusts, and the money meant to help children who had no one to protect them. His phone rang.It was Celia."Where are you?" she asked."In the basement.""You have no right to search my private rooms.""This house is mine too.""You are frightening me."Julian almost laughed. "You should try living with that feeling.""Come upstairs.""Why?""Because I have something you need."He found her in the locked study, holding the missing black leather ledger. She had removed several pages. The remaining entries were handwritten in her narrow script.Mara Quinn, monthly payment. Silence maintained.Mara Quinn, medical expense. Reminder issued.Mara Quinn, family contact withheld.Julian looked at the page. "You kept records of abusing her.""I kept records of expenses.""You paid her medical bills and counted them as leverage.""She was ill. I made sure she had care.""You made sure she could not leave."Celia closed the ledger. "You are acting like a child.""You stole the bank draft.""I did not.""Who did?""Ask Grant."Julian stepped closer. "What did you remove from the ledger?""Nothing important.""Then give it to me.""No."He reached for it. Celia pulled a small key from her pocket and locked the ledger inside the desk drawer."If you force this, I call the police.""Call them."She looked at him, and something broke in her composure."I built this life with you," she said. "I gave up everything to become your wife.""You gave up nothing. You took everything.""You think money protects people? It doesn't. It makes them targets.""You made Mara a target.""I made her visible.""You made her afraid."Celia's eyes glittered. "Fear is the only honest currency in this family."From the hallway came the sound of a camera shutter.Noah stood there holding his phone.Celia turned toward him."Delete that," she said."No."She advanced.Julian blocked her path."Try to take it," he said. For once, Celia stopped.Noah lowered the phone. "I also backed it up."The locked study no longer belonged to Celia's secrets. It belonged to evidence.
