Chapter 11 - The Sister at the Door

Naomi stood beside the piano with a letter in her hand."You knew they had been watching me," she said.Mara stopped in the doorway. "I knew they threatened to take you.""You knew enough to be afraid, but not enough to tell me.""I was trying to keep you safe.""You sent me to live with Aunt Ruth and never came for me.""I came every weekend.""You sat in the car outside.""Your aunt wouldn't let me inside.""Because you told her I was better off without you."Mara's face crumpled. "I was sick.""You were afraid.""Yes.""And I had to grow up believing you had chosen to lose me."Julian entered behind Mara. Celia sat in an armchair, watching the family fracture with the stillness of someone observing a laboratory experiment."You should not be here," he told Celia."This is my home.""Leave the room.""I want Naomi to hear the truth."Naomi turned on her. "You don't get to use me.""You are already being used by him.""He told me the truth.""He told you a version that makes him noble."Julian stepped forward. "I have never claimed to be noble.""You are a wealthy man who discovered a poor mother and decided to rescue her. It is a beautiful story for the papers.""I don't want a story for the papers.""Then what do you want?"He looked at Mara and Naomi. "A family that stops lying."Naomi laughed through tears. "You think wanting it makes it possible?""No. I think it makes it worth trying."Celia rose. "How touching."The front door opened. Lila entered with Priya and two boxes of documents."Mrs. Mercer," Lila said, "you need to stop contacting witnesses.""I have contacted no one.""You sent Naomi a packet this morning."Naomi held it up. Inside were copies of Mara's hospital discharge papers, a photograph of Naomi as a child, and a typed statement claiming Mara had abandoned both children."She sent this to my school," Naomi said. "My principal called me."Julian's expression turned hard. "Why?""Because the truth is complicated.""You threatened her career.""I provided information."Priya stepped forward. "You also told the board that I helped Mrs. Quinn steal the brooch."Celia's gaze moved to her. "Did you?""No.""Then you have nothing to fear.""I fear being made into your next lie."For the first time, Celia looked genuinely isolated.Lila placed the document boxes on the piano. "We recovered financial records from Grant Bell's office.""You raided it without a warrant," Celia said."Grant gave us access after his attorney arrived.""He has no authority.""He has plenty of authority to preserve his own defense."Naomi looked at Julian. "What does this have to do with me?""Celia and Grant used the foundation to move money," he said. "They planned to use the family trust to protect themselves.""And my name?""Your mother was part of the leverage. They knew the original records would connect you to me."Naomi turned toward Mara. "Did they ever contact you after I left?""Arthur Bell sent letters.""How many?""Three.""Where are they?""I burned them."Naomi stared at her."I was afraid he would find you," Mara said."You burned the only proof.""I was trying to burn the threat."Naomi's anger wavered. She looked at the exhausted woman before her, suddenly seeing not the mother who had chosen silence but the frightened girl inside the old body."You should have told me," Naomi said."I know.""You should have trusted me.""I know.""I may never forgive you.""I will wait."Naomi looked away.Julian reached toward her, then stopped. "I am not asking you to call me your brother.""Good.""I am asking you to let me help.""You have already helped. You made everything worse.""I did?""You walked into this house and expected truth to be clean. It isn't. It is full of people who failed, including my mother.""Then tell me what to do."Naomi's eyes met his. "Stay when it gets ugly.""I will."The words hung between them.Later, Mara found Naomi in the garden beside the dead fountain. Rain had stopped, leaving water beaded on the roses."I used to imagine you here," Naomi said."Here?""In a mansion. Eating at a table with people who had never counted coins.""I imagined you in a yellow house with a porch.""I had a yellow house.""I know.""How?""I drove past it once."Naomi turned. "You came to see me?""I stood across the street.""Why didn't you knock?""Your aunt answered the door. She told me you were happy.""I was not.""I know that now."Naomi looked toward the mansion. "Julian wants to make things right.""He is his father's son. He thinks every problem has a door he can open with the right key.""Maybe he will learn.""Maybe we all will."Inside, Lila opened the final file recovered from Grant's office. It contained a draft press release prepared for the day Celia took control of the foundation. The headline read: Mercer Heir Suffers Public Breakdown Amid Fraud Allegations.Beneath it was a list of fabricated accusations against Julian, Mara, Priya, and Naomi.Diane read the page and whispered, "She was going to destroy all of us."Lila folded the paper. "She was going to make destruction look like protection."From upstairs came a crash.Julian ran toward the sound. In Celia's bedroom, the safe door hung open. The original birth certificate lay torn across the floor. One piece was missing. On the mirror, written in red lipstick, were four words.Ask who signed it.
