Chapter 12 - The Price of Silence

The missing piece of the birth certificate turned out to be the corner containing the judge's signature.Lila photographed the torn edge and placed the remaining document in a protective sleeve. "Celia wants you to believe the signature is the key.""Isn't it?" Julian asked."It may be. But she also wants you looking at the paper instead of the person who removed it."Grant Bell had disappeared. His office was empty, his phone went straight to voicemail, and his car was gone from the foundation garage. Police issued a notice after Margaret Sloan reported the financial records missing.Celia claimed not to know where he was.No one believed her.Julian found her in the conservatory, sitting among citrus trees and white orchids. She wore no jewelry and had not slept."Did Grant take the signature?" he asked."I don't know.""Did he take the original records?""I don't know.""You keep saying that.""Because it is true.""What did you promise him?"Celia touched a leaf. "A position.""In exchange for what?""Loyalty.""That isn't an answer.""You want me to confess to every bad thing I have ever done?""I want to know why you did this."She laughed softly. "You want a reason that makes you feel better.""No.""Everyone wants one. Mara was poor. Grant was ambitious. Victor was frightened. Eleanor was weak. You were sheltered. Diane was ignored. I was the only person who understood that love is not protection.""Then what is it?""Leverage.""That is what you call love?""That is what love becomes when losing is not an option."Julian sat across from her. "Tell me about your family."Celia looked surprised."You have used mine as an excuse for everything," he said. "Tell me yours."She turned toward the rain-fogged glass."My mother worked nights at a motel in Gary. My father left before I was born. She married a man who drank and broke furniture when he was angry. I learned early that a locked door was not protection. It was a challenge.""Did he hurt you?""Sometimes.""Did your mother protect you?""She told me to be quiet so the neighbors wouldn't hear."The answer contained the blueprint of Celia's life."When I met you," she continued, "I thought I had found a door that could never be broken. You had money, a name, a family that listened when you spoke. I believed if I became indispensable, no one could send me away.""So you found Mara.""I found the letter.""From Eleanor.""She had kept it in a box with your childhood drawings. I was looking for a prenuptial document.""Why didn't you tell me?""Because I knew what you would do.""What?""You would search for her. You would forgive her. You would make her part of your life.""And you were afraid?""I was certain there would be no place for me.""There was always a place for you.""Not if I had to share it."Julian stared at her. "You could have asked.""I did not know how.""You knew how to threaten an old woman."Celia's eyes lowered."What did you make her do?" he asked."Nothing she was not already capable of.""Answer me.""She worked in the house. She cooked. She cleaned. She kept quiet.""You withheld her wages twice.""She owed me.""You told her Naomi would lose her job.""I told her what might happen if the story became public.""You sent her to the emergency room after she collapsed in the laundry room.""I paid the bill.""You left her there alone."Celia's face tightened. "I was at a dinner.""You were at a party.""I did not know she would faint.""You knew she was sick."The conservatory became very still."I am not innocent," Celia said."No.""But neither are you.""I know.""You want to punish me because I did the things you were too decent to do.""I want accountability.""Accountability is a word rich people use when they want someone else to suffer in public.""Then I will suffer in public too."He stood."I am ending our marriage."Celia's face changed."You cannot.""I can.""The trust amendment—""Was written by my father, and it does not give you ownership of my life.""You will lose the foundation.""If I do, I do.""You will lose your name.""It was never mine."Celia rose too quickly and gripped the table."You will regret this.""I already regret what I did not see."He left her among the orchids. At the same time, Naomi and Mara visited St. Agnes Hospital. The building had been converted into apartments, but the old nurses' garden remained behind a chain-link fence. They found the green tin beneath a stone marked with a fading cross.Inside was a register, several photographs, and a key taped to a note. The note read: For the archive room. If I am gone, do not trust the administrator.Naomi turned to Mara. "Helen knew.""She knew enough to be afraid."The archive room was now a maintenance closet. A retired janitor named Cal Rourke recognized the key."Helen gave this to me," he said. "Told me to keep it until someone came asking about a baby.""Why didn't you come forward?" Naomi asked."Because Arthur Bell visited me. He said the police would think I was stealing records."Cal opened a cabinet and removed a bundle of wrapped files. The admission register listed a male infant born to Mara Quinn on September seventeenth, 1982.Beside the entry was a handwritten note: transferred alive, 6:40 p.m.Julian's birth certificate had listed a different time.Lila, who had followed them, photographed every page.Mara sat on the dusty floor."He was alive," she said."You held him," Naomi answered."I held him, and they took him."Naomi sat beside her.For several minutes, neither spoke. Then Naomi said, "You don't have to wait for forgiveness.""I know.""You can start telling the truth anyway."Mara looked at the register."I will."When they returned to Haverford, Julian was waiting on the porch."I filed for divorce," he said.Mara looked at him with concern. "Are you sure?""No.""Then why?""Because certainty is another thing this family used to demand before anyone was allowed to act."Naomi stepped onto the porch."That sounds like something you learned today.""It is."Behind them, the mansion's windows reflected three figures standing outside its doors. For the first time, none of them looked trapped inside.
