Chapter 4 - The Black SUV
Samuel Ortiz was found alive at 4:12 the next morning.
A state trooper spotted him walking barefoot near an abandoned quarry.
He had bruised ribs, a split lip, and duct-tape marks around his wrists.
Victoria visited him at the hospital.
“What happened?”
“Black SUV.”
“How many men?”
“Two.”
“Recognize either?”
“One.”
Using personnel photographs, Samuel identified Deputy Kevin Morrow from the narcotics division.
Morrow had called Crane forty-one times in six months.
Samuel said his kidnappers wanted to know what he had told Victoria.
“One of them got a call,” Samuel continued. “He said, ‘No, she’s still active.’ Then he said Crane could fix department files, but not the federal side.”
Victoria and Benton exchanged a look.
The leak knew details of the federal operation.
They designed a test.
Four senior people received four different fake witness-transfer locations.
Deputy Chief Martin Shaw received location D: an isolated farmhouse.
That night, a black SUV appeared near the farmhouse.
Two men exited.
One was Morrow.
Agents arrested him after a short chase.
Inside the SUV they found cash, zip ties, stolen plates, firearms, and a folder of surveillance photographs.
One image showed Victoria outside her apartment.
Deleted messages from Morrow’s phone included a contact labeled DS.
One message read:
V.H. remains operational. Do not approach without approval.
Victoria stared at the initials.
Deputy Shaw.
Her phone rang.
Shaw.
“I heard there was an arrest,” he said.
“News travels fast.”
“You need to come to my office. Crane is more dangerous than you understand.”
“Then tell me now.”
“Not by phone.”
Victoria glanced at Benton.
“Why the urgency?”
Shaw paused.
“Because Crane knows you used the farmhouse as a leak test.”
Victoria’s entire body tightened.
Only task-force leadership knew it was a test.
She kept her voice calm.
“How would he know?”
