Rebecca was careful.
“This does not prove Thomas wanted Emily dead.”
Emily nodded.
“Good.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I don’t want anyone making the story worse just because what he actually did was already terrible.”
I stared at my sister.
She was nineteen.
Sick.
Robbed.
Yet she understood something many adults never learned.
Truth did not need exaggeration.
The evidence supported fraud.
Trust diversion.
Obstruction.
False accounting.
Insurance interference.
Conflict-of-interest concealment.
Not attempted murder.
That distinction mattered.
Thomas was removed as chairman.
His assets were frozen during the investigation.
The sale collapsed.
Then he called Victoria from his attorney’s office.
“You’re destroying Richard’s legacy.”
Mom answered:
“No.”
“You did that when you used his secrets as an ATM.”
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“You think Richard was innocent?”
“No.”
Victoria’s answer surprised him.
“My husband betrayed me.”
“He betrayed Clara.”
“He hid Emily.”
“That is his responsibility.”
Then:
“And stealing from his daughter is yours.”
Thomas had no answer.
Neither did I.
For years, our family had protected Dad’s reputation by simplifying him.
Good husband.
Great father.
Brilliant founder.
The truth was more complicated.
He loved us.
