Chapter 5 - Why My Mother Stayed SilentI confronted Victoria that evening.
“You found this three months ago.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I was trying to restore Emily’s treatment.”
“By secretly giving her money?”
“Yes.”
“Why not tell us?”
Victoria stared through the kitchen window.
“Because I hated her.”
I stopped.
“Emily?”
“No.”
She turned.
“The idea of her.”
Victoria discovered the affair after Dad died.
Inside his private safe she found Clara’s letters.
Emily’s photograph.
The trust documents.
For weeks, she could barely breathe.
She wanted to burn everything.
“I looked at that photograph and thought she was proof that my marriage had been a lie.”
Her voice cracked.
“So I closed the safe.”
“For seven years?”
“Yes.”
I stared at her.
“What changed?”
“Three months ago, I received a letter.”
From Clara’s attorney.
Clara had instructed him to contact Victoria when Emily’s health deteriorated significantly.
Victoria went to the hospital.
She expected to see the woman who had destroyed her marriage.
Instead she found a nineteen-year-old girl alone.
Emily apologized.
For existing.
Victoria cried as she told us.
“She said, ‘I’m sorry my father hurt you.’”
Emily had done nothing.
Yet she apologized.
Victoria began paying medical costs quietly.
But Emily needed a specialized cardiac procedure.

Almost $400,000.
That explained Victoria asking me repeatedly for money without telling me why.
I sat beside her.
“Mom.”
“I know.”
“You should have told us.”
“I know.”
“But you helped her.”
Victoria shook her head.
“Too late.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“What?”
“Late is not the same as never.”
For the first time in months, my mother allowed herself to cry in front of me.
Then Daniel entered.
His face was pale.
“I found something.”
“What?”
“Thomas called an emergency board meeting.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow.”
“Why?”
Daniel placed his phone down.
“He wants to sell Bennett Medical.”
I stared.
“To whom?”
Daniel answered:
“A private equity group connected to Bennett Strategic Holdings.”
