Chapter 4 - The Trust That DisappearedDad had created the Morgan Medical Trust shortly after Emily’s birth.

Initial value:

$3 million.

With investment growth, it should have been worth more than $12 million by the time Emily turned eighteen.

Instead, the trust officially showed a balance of:

$18,400.

Daniel immediately called our general counsel, Rebecca Sloan.

By afternoon, we were sitting in a private conference room.

Rebecca inserted Emily’s USB.

The files had been copied by Clara years earlier.

Trust statements.

Emails.

Wire confirmations.

Then something worse.

Internal correspondence.

One email was from Dad.

Why was the Morgan distribution rejected again?

The reply came from:

Thomas Bennett.

Our uncle.

My father’s younger brother.

Thomas had served as CFO of Bennett Medical for twenty-five years.

After Dad died, he became chairman.

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

Rebecca kept reading.

Thomas replied:

Compliance flagged the beneficiary documentation. I’ll handle it.

Another email.

Dad:

Do not delay Emily’s treatment again.

Thomas:

Resolved.

Except it had not been resolved.

Rebecca traced the money.

Transfers left the Morgan Trust.

Then moved through three administrative entities.

Finally reaching:

Bennett Strategic Holdings.

A private company controlled by Thomas.

Daniel stood up.

“He stole from a sick child.”

Rebecca raised a hand.

“We need more evidence before we call it theft.”

Emily said quietly:

“My mother had more.”

She opened another folder.

Audio recordings.

Clara had recorded one meeting with Thomas.

His voice filled the room.

Richard made a mistake. That doesn’t mean the entire family should pay for it.

Clara:

The money belongs to Emily.

Thomas:

The money belongs to Bennett interests.

Then:

If you make this public, Victoria learns about the affair. Richard loses his family. The company loses its reputation. Everybody suffers.

Clara answered:

Except you.

Silence.

Thomas:

Take the settlement, Clara.

The recording ended.

Victoria looked like she had been struck.

Thomas had not merely stolen money.

May you like

He had used my father’s shame to control him.

And now Thomas was chairman of the company Dad built.
