Chapter 9 - THE GRAVE THAT WASN'T MINE

Five months later, Elena returned to the cemetery.

The grave still carried her name.

ELENA BLACKWELL — 1978–2019

She stood silently beside it.

Adrian joined her.

“I thought we'd remove it.”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“Why not?”

“Because it reminds me how far we've come.”

She placed a white rose on the stone.

“For the woman everyone thought was dead.”

Adrian held her hand.

“She deserved a funeral.”

“She got one.”

“A funeral for someone who wasn't dead.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“I suppose that is what grief sometimes does.”

Lucas and Daniel arrived.

They stood beside their mother.

For years, Lucas had never known what the name Blackwell meant.

Now he did.

But he didn't care about the wealth.

He cared about his mother.

He cared about his father.

He cared about his brother.

Daniel touched the grave.

“This feels strange.”

Elena smiled.

“You get used to strange.”

Lucas laughed.

Then he pulled something from his pocket.

The ring.

The diamond ring that had started everything.

He had worn it for years.

Now he handed it to Elena.

“I think it's yours.”

She stared at it.

Then took it.

Her fingers trembled.

Adrian looked at her.

“I thought it was gone forever.”

“So did I.”

She slid it onto her finger.

It fit perfectly.

The same ring she had worn when she and Adrian first married.

The same ring Adrian had believed he buried forever.

Lucas smiled.

“Looks right.”

Elena looked at her sons.

Then her husband.

For the first time, the cemetery didn't feel like a place of death.

It felt like a place where the lie finally ended.

They left together.

Outside, the morning sun was beginning to rise.
