Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER WHO CHOSE TO DISAPPEAR

Elena told him everything.

Five years earlier, she had discovered secret transactions inside Victor's companies.

Money was being moved through offshore accounts.

Property was being acquired under false identities.

The largest asset was a private trust created by Elena's father.

She and Adrian's children were beneficiaries.

Victor wanted control.

Marianne wanted a share.

Together, they created a plan.

They would make Elena disappear.

Then they would convince Adrian that she had died.

After Elena's death, the trust would eventually become vulnerable.

But the plan failed.

Elena survived the crash.

She woke inside a private medical clinic.

She was severely injured.

Doctors told her she had been found near the highway.

A nurse named Sarah had recognized her.

Sarah had once worked for Elena's father.

She secretly protected her.

When Elena realized her enemies believed she was dead, she made a decision.

She stayed dead.

She disappeared.

She raised Lucas under another name.

She stayed away from Adrian.

Not because she stopped loving him.

Because she believed being near him would put him and the children in danger.

Adrian cried.

“You should have told me.”

“I tried.”

“How?”

“I sent letters.”

“I never received them.”

“Victor intercepted them.”

“Why didn't you trust someone else?”

“I trusted the wrong people once.”

She looked at him.

“After that, I trusted no one.”

Adrian reached for her hand.

This time she didn't pull away.

“I mourned you.”

“I know.”

“For five years.”

“I know.”

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I stood beside your grave.”

Elena began crying.

“I watched from a distance.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You saw me?”

“Every year.”

He closed his eyes.

All that grief.

All that wasted time.

All those anniversaries.

All those nights.

He had been mourning a living woman.

Then he whispered:

“Lucas knows?”

“He knows you were his father.”

“Does he know everything?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He deserved a childhood.”

Adrian nodded.

“I understand.”

Elena took a breath.

“But we cannot stay hidden.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor knows the trust still exists.”

“And if he finds us?”

“He won't stop.”

Adrian stood.

“Then we stop him.”

Elena looked frightened.

“This isn't a business fight.”

“No.”

“This is personal.”

Adrian looked toward the photograph of Lucas.

“Then I'll fight differently.”

He returned to Chicago.

Sofia was waiting.

She had already found the money.

A secret trust.

A series of offshore accounts.

And a connection to the Mercer family.

The names were shocking.

Victor Hale.

Marianne Blackwell.

And several directors from Adrian's own company.

Sofia placed the documents on the table.

“There was never an accidental death.”

“It was planned.”

“And your family was involved.”

Adrian looked at the papers.

Then at the photograph of Elena and Lucas.

“They thought they buried my wife.”

May you like

He folded the document.

“They have no idea what they've awakened.”
