THE MORETTI DAUGHTER / Chapter 2 / 20

Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO CAME THROUGH THE NIGHT

I don't know how long I lay on that basement floor.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Maybe an hour.

Pain distorted time.

Then I heard engines.

Multiple engines.

They stopped outside the house.

Doors slammed.

Footsteps crossed the stone driveway.

Brandon's voice drifted faintly from upstairs.

“What the hell?”

Another voice answered.

“Mr. Hale?”

Silence.

Then:

“Open the door.”

I recognized my father's voice.

Even after twenty years.

Brandon didn't.

“Who are you?”

The answer came quietly.

“Vincent Moretti.”

The house went silent.

I heard something fall.

Then Brandon said, “That's impossible.”

My father's voice remained calm.

“Open the basement.”

“No.”

A pause.

“Then we open it ourselves.”

Heavy footsteps moved toward the stairs.

A moment later, the basement door flew open.

Light flooded the room.

Two men entered first.

Then my father.

Vincent Moretti was seventy years old.

But he didn't look seventy.

He wore a black overcoat and carried himself with the rigid stillness of a man who had spent his entire life being obeyed.

His hair was silver now.

His face was thinner.

But his eyes were exactly as I remembered.

Dark.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

He saw me.

Everything changed.

The powerful man disappeared.

My father became a father.

“Emma.”

He dropped to his knees beside me.

“Oh God.”

His hands hovered over me, afraid to touch.

“Where does it hurt?”

“My ribs.”

He looked at one of his men.

“Call the ambulance.”

“Already done.”

My father looked at me again.

“Who did this?”

I couldn't answer.

He already knew.

“Brandon?”

I nodded.

His jaw tightened.

Then footsteps sounded above.

Brandon appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Mr. Moretti, I can explain.”

My father stood.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

“You locked my daughter in a basement.”

“It was a misunderstanding.”

“You broke her ribs.”

“She attacked Ashley.”

My father stared at him.

“Did you just justify beating my daughter?”

Brandon swallowed.

“You don't understand.”

“Oh, I understand.”

He stepped closer.

“Very clearly.”

Brandon tried to maintain his composure.

“You can't come into my house and threaten me.”

My father smiled.

It wasn't a pleasant smile.

“This isn't your house anymore.”

Brandon looked confused.

Then my father pointed toward me.

“You hurt my daughter.”

“I didn't know who she was.”

That sentence hung in the air.

My father stared at him.

Then he whispered:

“That is the problem.”

The ambulance arrived.

Paramedics carried me upstairs.

Ashley stood in the hallway crying.

When she saw my father, she froze.

“You…”

My father looked at her.

“You're Ashley.”

She nodded.

He turned away.

“You're not worth my time.”

That was somehow more terrifying than anger.

At the hospital, doctors confirmed three fractured ribs and a concussion.

I spent the night under observation.

My father stayed beside my bed.

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

Finally I whispered:

“Why did Mom take me?”

His face changed.

“I wondered when you'd ask.”

“You never looked for me.”

“I did.”

“Then why didn't you come?”

“Because your mother made me promise.”

“She said you were dangerous.”

“I was.”

I stared at him.

He didn't deny it.

“I made terrible choices when I was young,” he said. “Your mother believed taking you away would give you a normal life.”

“It did.”

“Did it?”

I looked away.

He was right.

My marriage had been anything but normal.

My father reached into his coat.

He placed an old photograph beside me.

It showed my mother.

Young.

Beautiful.

Standing beside Vincent.

I had never seen it.

“Your mother loved me,” he said.

“Then why did she leave?”

“Because she discovered what my business really was.”

“What business?”

He hesitated.

“Things I can't explain in a hospital room.”

I looked at him.

“Are you still involved?”

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Then he leaned closer.

“Emma, your husband isn't just cheating on you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“Brandon has been moving money through your design company.”

I stared at him.

“How do you know?”

“I have people who watch financial activity.”

“Why would you watch me?”

“Because I never stopped watching over you.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“You should have told me.”

“I thought staying away would keep you safe.”

“It didn't.”

“No.”

He looked toward the hospital window.

“That is why I came.”

The next morning, Detective Samuel Brooks entered my room.

He had already spoken with the hospital.

He knew about Brandon.

He knew about Ashley.

He also knew something else.

“Mrs. Hale, there are financial irregularities connected to your company.”

I looked at my father.

He said nothing.

Detective Brooks continued.

“Someone has been forging your signature.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who?”

“We don't know yet.”

Then he placed a folder on my bed.

Inside were copies of contracts.

Loans.

Property transfers.

Bank statements.

All carrying my signature.

Except I had never signed them.

Brandon hadn't simply betrayed my marriage.

He had been preparing to destroy my life.

And I suddenly understood something.

My father's arrival wasn't the beginning of this war.

It was the moment I finally discovered the war had already started.
