Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

How Vanessa had managed to bypass museum security was a mystery, but her presence immediately transformed the tense atmosphere into something explosive.
"Security must be slipping," Luca said coldly, stepping directly in front of me to shield me from her view. "You were told never to set foot in Chicago again, Vanessa."
Vanessa laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "You think a little threat and a broken engagement is going to stop me, Luca? You ruined my life! You threw me out like garbage for a common maid!"
"You tried to poison me," Luca reminded her calmly.
"I was securing my future!" she shrieked, taking a step forward. Her hand flashed inside her handbag, and before anyone could react, she whipped out a small, snub-nosed revolver, pointing it directly at my chest.
Gasps erupted from the nearby guests on the balcony, who scrambled backward in sheer terror.
"If I can't have Moretti Enterprises, and you prefer this pathetic little cleaner over me," Vanessa screamed, her finger tightening on the trigger, "then nobody gets anything!"
I didn't have time to think. Years of dodging domestic chaos, working grueling shifts, and learning how to read dangerous micro-expressions took over instantly. Instead of freezing, I lunged forward, grabbing a heavy silver champagne bucket off a nearby pedestal and hurling it straight at Vanessa’s face.
The heavy bucket struck her right across the wrist with a sharp thud.
Vanessa yelped in pain, the revolver flying out of her hand and clattering across the marble floor.
Before she could recover, Luca moved with terrifying speed. He grabbed her by the shoulders, slammed her firmly against the stone pillar of the balcony, and pinned her arms behind her back with absolute authority.
Within three seconds, Marcus and two tactical officers materialized from the shadows, subduing Vanessa and slapping heavy steel cuffs around her wrists.
"Federal marshals are already waiting at the service entrance for your extradition order, Vanessa," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Try not to enjoy your new home in a federal penitentiary."
As they dragged her away, kicking and screaming obscenities, my knees suddenly felt weak. The adrenaline rush faded, leaving a cold, trembling realization of how close I had just come to losing everything.
Strong arms wrapped securely around my waist, steadying me before my legs could give out.
"Emma," Luca murmured, his face inches from mine, his dark eyes filled with a raw, unfiltered panic that he rarely allowed anyone to see. "Are you alright?"
"I'm... I'm okay," I breathed out, resting my hands against the solid warmth of his chest. "Just... a little shaken."
May you like
Luca pulled me into a tight, protective embrace, burying his face slightly in my hair. "I should have had tighter perimeter checks. I won't ever let anyone touch you, Emma. Do you hear me?"
Looking up into his eyes, I realized that the cold, feared mafia boss of Chicago had entirely vanished. What remained was a man who cared deeply, fiercely, and unconditionally.
