Chapter 5 - Uncovering the European Ledger

Working alongside Luca Moreti was an education in absolute power, razor-sharp intellect, and terrifying efficiency. Over the next three weeks, my office became the command center for unravelling the corporate rot that Julian Vance had carefully cultivated within Moretti Enterprises while Luca was busy managing the broader empire.

It was a Tuesday evening at 8:30 PM. The executive floor was nearly deserted, save for the hum of the air conditioning and the soft glow of my desk lamp.

I was cross-referencing three separate shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands with shipping manifests from Hamburg and Rotterdam, tracing missing cargo shipments of high-end electronics and luxury goods.

The door to my office opened quietly, and Luca walked in, carrying two paper cups of black coffee from the lobby cafe. He set one down beside my keyboard.

"You're still here," he observed, leaning against the corner of my desk and looking down at my open spreadsheets.

"I found something," I said, spinning my monitor around so he could see the highlighted data points. "Look at the port entry logs for March through May. Julian’s acquisition division officially reported a thirty percent drop in container processing efficiency due to 'labor strikes in Germany.' But look at the customs clearance stamps."

Luca leaned closer, his shoulder brushing mine as he studied the screen. His proximity sent an unexpected, warm shiver down my spine, but I forced my focus back to the numbers.

"Those stamps are digital counterfeits," Luca murmured, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "The ports in Hamburg were fully operational. The cargo arrived, cleared customs, and was diverted off the books."

"Diverted straight to a private warehouse network owned by a front company linked to Julian’s brother-in-law," I finished triumphantly, tapping the screen. "He’s been skimming millions in inventory right under your nose, using the acquisition department as a laundering front."

Luca straightened up, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips. It was the smile of a predator who had finally cornered his prey.

"For two years, Julian has been playing a very clever game," Luca said softly. "He thought my focus on the domestic real estate and hospitality sectors left my international shipping exposed. He had no idea my new coordinator would spend three weeks tearing apart his digital paper trail."

"What’s our next move?" I asked, looking up at him. "Do we take this straight to the board?"

"No," Luca replied instantly. "If we go to the board now, Julian’s allies will help him bury the evidence behind procedural delays and injunctions. We need to catch him in the act—completely red-handed, with zero room for legal maneuvering."

"How?"

Luca leaned down slightly, placing both hands on my desk, bringing his face close enough that I could see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes.

"Tomorrow night, Julian is hosting a private gala at the Museum of Contemporary Art to showcase his new 'philanthropic foundation.' In reality, it’s a front to auction off the stolen inventory to international buyers," Luca explained smoothly. "And you and I are going to be attending as his guests of honor."
