Chapter 4 - Stepping Into the Inner Circle

Monday morning marked my official transition from the quiet shadows of the housekeeping staff into the high-stakes, tightly controlled inner circle of Moretti Enterprises.

Instead of a black dress and white apron, I arrived at the grand downtown corporate tower wearing a sharply tailored charcoal pantsuit that Luca’s private stylist had delivered to my family’s apartment over the weekend. My hair was pulled back into a sleek bun, and my old canvas tote bag had been replaced by a leather briefcase.

When I stepped off the private elevator onto the forty-fifth floor, the contrast was staggering.

The executive floor was a maze of smoked glass, brushed steel, and minimalist art. Junior executives in expensive suits hurried past carrying tablets, whispering nervously into phones. But as soon as they saw me walking down the corridor accompanied by Marcus, Luca’s head of security, their steps slowed and they offered respectful, cautious nods. Word of Saturday night’s dining room debacle had clearly filtered through the organization faster than a corporate memo.

Marcus led me to a spacious, sunlit office right next to Luca’s master suite, overlooking the sweeping skyline of downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan.

"Your desk is fully encrypted, the comms line is routed directly to my security station downstairs, and the personal assistant downstairs knows not to schedule any meetings before you’ve reviewed the morning intel reports," Marcus briefed me professionally, setting a thick stack of manila folders on my desk.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, running my hand across the smooth mahogany surface of my new desk.

"Don't thank me yet," Marcus warned with a dry half-smile. "Now that you're working directly under the boss, half the board members are going to treat you like a threat, and the other half are going to try to figure out what leverage you have over him. Keep your eyes open."

True to Marcus’s warning, it didn't take long for the corporate sharks to test the new arrival.

Less than an hour later, the frosted glass door of my office swung open without a knock. A tall, impeccably groomed man in a midnight-blue Versace suit strolled in, carrying a tablet. It was Julian Vance, Moretti Enterprises’ senior vice president of acquisitions—and a man rumored to have aspirations of pushing Luca out of the controlling seat.

"So," Julian drawled, leaning casually against the edge of my desk and looking down at me with an indulgent, condescending smirk. "You’re the little cleaning girl Luca suddenly promoted to the executive suite. Quite the Cinderella story."

I didn't flinch. I kept my posture straight, remembering every single lesson I had learned watching people like Vanessa try to intimidate me.

"Good morning, Mr. Vance," I replied smoothly, not bothering to look up from my tablet. "Can I help you with something, or did you forget how to knock?"

Julian’s smirk tightened into a hard line. "Watch your tone, sweetheart. You might have fooled Luca into thinking you’re some kind of operational genius with your little dinner trick, but down here in the corporate trenches, you’re out of your depth. I’ve been running acquisitions for twelve years. I suggest you stay out of my way."

Before I could answer, a cold, sharp voice echoed from the doorway behind him.

"Is there a problem in your office, Emma?"

Julian spun around instantly, all color draining from his face as he saw Luca standing in the doorway, his hands casually shoved into his trouser pockets, his dark eyes fixed on Julian with lethal intensity.

"L-Luca," Julian stammered, stepping away from my desk. "No problem at all. Just... welcoming our new coordinator to the executive team."

Luca walked slowly into the room, stopping right beside my chair. He didn't look at Julian; he kept his eyes locked on me, offering a subtle, approving nod before turning his gaze to the senior vice president.

"Julian," Luca said softly, his voice cutting like broken glass. "Emma reviews all acquisition files before they cross my desk effective immediately. If I catch you in her office without an appointment again, you won't be managing acquisitions. You’ll be looking for a new career."

Julian swallowed hard, clutching his tablet like a shield. "Understood, Luca." He cast one venomous glare in my direction before practically sprinting out of the office.

Luca turned to me once the door clicked shut. "Are you holding up alright?"

May you like

"Better than he is, I think," I replied, a genuine smile breaking across my face.

Luca’s expression softened into something warm and human. "Good. Because tomorrow, we start looking into the financial irregularities Julian has been hiding in the European shipping logs."
