Chapter 2 - The Contents of the Silver Box

The silence that fell over the dining room was heavy enough to suffocate. The flickering candlelight seemed to dim as every guest leaned away from Vanessa Bellini, as if her panic were contagious.

One of the security guards standing near the doorway stepped forward instantly. Without waiting for a second command, he reached across the back of Vanessa’s chair, lifted her designer leather clutch from where it hung on the hook, and placed it squarely on the white linen tablecloth in front of Luca.

Vanessa lunged forward, her hands clawing toward the bag. "Don't you dare! That’s an invasion of privacy! Dominic, tell them to stop this madness right now!"

She used his middle name—a familiar endearment meant to remind everyone of their impending union. But Luca didn't even flinch. He raised a single finger, and the guard gently but firmly pressed Vanessa back down into her seat by her shoulder.

"Open it," Luca instructed the guard, his voice level and devoid of any warmth.

The guard unzipped the gold clasp of the designer purse. Inside lay the usual array of high-society accessories: a compact mirror, a diamond-encrusted lipstick case, a cardholder, and a small, heavy silver pillbox inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

"Bring me the box," Luca said.

The guard lifted the small silver container and set it delicately before Luca on the pristine tablecloth.

Vanessa was trembling now, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her carefully constructed facade of aristocratic poise had completely shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered woman underneath.

"It’s just herbal calming supplements!" Vanessa stammered, her voice pitching an octave higher. "My doctor prescribed them for my wedding anxiety! That maid is lying, Luca! She’s trying to sabotage us because she’s jealous of our life!"

Luca ignored her entirely. His large, steady fingers popped the clasp of the silver box. Inside, resting on a bed of velvet lining, were several dried, crushed leaves alongside a small vial of clear, odorless liquid.

He looked up, his dark gaze cutting straight through Vanessa and landing on me.

"Emma," Luca said quietly. "Are these the leaves you saw her take out?"

I stepped closer, peering down at the open box. "Yes, sir. They look identical to the ones garnish on the sea bass."

Luca turned his gaze back to Vanessa. He didn't yell. He didn't slam his fist on the table. He simply looked at her with a chilling, clinical detachment that was far more terrifying than any outburst of rage.

"Do you know what digital glycosides do to a cardiovascular system already compromised by congenital heart arrhythmias, Vanessa?" Luca asked softly.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her lips parting, but no sound came out.

"A tiny, tasteless extract from foxglove leaves," Luca continued, his voice dropping into a rhythmic, dangerous cadence. "It mimics a massive heart attack within twenty minutes of ingestion. Perfect for an ambitious fiancée who wants full control of her husband’s estate through a tragic, untimely widowerhood clause before the prenuptial trust takes effect."

A collective gasp rippled through the thirty-two guests. Several socialites stood up abruptly from their chairs, instinctively stepping back from the table as if a bomb had just been placed among the crystal glassware.

"This is a conspiracy!" Vanessa shrieked, tears streaming down her face as she realized her elaborate plan had unraveled entirely because a twenty-seven-year-old housekeeper paid attention to details. "You're framing me! Both of you!"

Luca closed the silver box with a sharp click. He raised his hand, signaling the guards.

"Take her out of my sight," Luca ordered coldly. "Pack her belongings into garbage bags and throw them off the property. Ensure her father’s shipping contracts with Moretti Enterprises are terminated by midnight. She leaves Chicago tonight, and if she ever sets foot in the Gold Coast again, she won't need poison to stop her heart."

Two guards grabbed Vanessa by her arms. She screamed, thrashing wildly against them, her designer gown tearing as she was dragged backward out of the dining room, her frantic cries echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy mahogany doors swung shut, cutting her off from the world she had tried to conquer.

The dining room remained dead silent.

Thirty-two elite guests sat frozen, too terrified to speak, too paralyzed to leave.

Luca slowly turned his head away from the empty doorway and looked up at me. I stood frozen in place, my hands clasped tightly in front of my apron, bracing myself for whatever punishment or dismissal was bound to follow my reckless intervention.

"Emma," Luca said, his voice unusually gentle compared to the icy fury he had directed at Vanessa.

May you like

"Yes, sir?" I whispered.

"Stay in the kitchen," he instructed, standing up slowly from his chair. "When my guests leave, we need to have a very thorough conversation about your qualifications."
