Chapter 5 - The War for Sterling Enterprises

The morning after the truth was revealed, the atmosphere in the Sterling estate was transformed. There were no more secrets between Arthur and Elena. However, their personal victory meant that an external war was about to begin. Julian’s plot had failed, and Arthur knew his stepbrother would not sit idly by.

Arthur called a private meeting in his study with his personal legal counsel, Mr. Harrison, a loyal attorney who had served Arthur’s late father. Elena sat beside Arthur, no longer wearing her maid's apron, but dressed in simple, elegant street clothes.

"Julian has called an emergency board meeting for next Tuesday," Mr. Harrison reported, placing a stack of legal notices on the desk. "He claims he has evidence of your physical and mental inability to carry out your duties as Chairman. He intends to invoke Clause 9 of the corporate charter to force an immediate vote on your removal."

Arthur looked at his lawyer calmly. "What evidence does he have?"

"He plans to present your medical records following the accident, along with testimonies from staff asserting that you have become reclusive and unstable," Harrison explained. "He is painting a picture of a man who has completely surrendered his sanity to isolation."

Arthur smiled—a genuine, sharp, confident smile that Harrison hadn't seen in over three years.

"Then we shall give the board a surprise," Arthur said firmly. He looked over at Elena, who squeezed his hand reassuringly. "For three years, I let Julian run the company because I didn't care whether I lived or died. I let him push me into the shadows because I believed I was useless. That ends now."

Over the next four days, Arthur engaged in intense physical therapy and corporate preparation. Guided by Elena’s constant support, he spent six hours a day pushing his physical limits, regaining his ability to walk short distances with the aid of a stylish mahogany cane. Simultaneously, he reviewed three years’ worth of Sterling Enterprises' financial audits, uncovering several suspicious offshore transactions initiated by Julian during Arthur’s absence.

On the morning of the board meeting, the Sterling Enterprises headquarters in the heart of the city was bustling with reporters and corporate executives. Julian stood at the head of the boardroom table, surrounded by twelve board members. He looked sleek, confident, and triumphant.

"Gentlemen," Julian announced, adjusting his silk tie as he addressed the board. "It breaks my heart to bring this motion forward. My brother, Arthur, has been a visionary leader. But since his tragic accident, he has retreated into seclusion. He is no longer capable of grasping the complex realities of our global operations. For the health of this company, we must officially vote to transfer all executive power to me."

"Are you quite sure about my mental state, Julian?" a deep, resonant voice echoed from the entrance of the boardroom.

The double doors swung open.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent. Reporters in the hallway gasped, cameras flashing through the glass panels.

Arthur Sterling stepped into the room. He was not in a wheelchair. Wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his posture erect and commanding, he walked smoothly into the room using only a sleek mahogany cane. Beside him walked Elena, calm and dignified, carrying an executive briefcase.

Julian’s face drained of all color. He stumbled back against the table, staring at his brother as if he were looking at a ghost. "Arthur... You... How?"

"I hear you were concerned about my health, brother," Arthur said smoothly, taking his place at the head of the long table—the Chairmanship seat that had sat empty for three years.

Arthur sat down, placing his cane against the table. Elena opened the briefcase, handing Arthur a set of bound financial documents.

"While you were busy organizing emergency meetings to steal my position," Arthur declared, his voice cutting through the room with unquestionable authority, "I was busy reviewing the company's books. And I must say, Julian, your accounting skills leave much to be desired."

Arthur slammed the documents onto the table. "Board members, before you is proof of systemic embezzlement. Over the last eighteen months, Julian Sterling has funneled over forty million dollars into shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands—money stolen directly from our research and development funds."

Whispers erupted around the room. Board members frantically flipped through the pages, their expressions turning from shock to outrage as they saw the undeniable evidence of Julian’s fraud.

Julian turned pale, his hands shaking. "This... This is a lie! She made this! That maid manipulated you!"

"That 'maid' is Elena Vance," Arthur said, standing up and placing a protective arm around Elena’s waist. "And she saved this company from your greed, just as she saved my life from your toxicity."

Arthur turned to the head of corporate security standing at the door. "Escort my stepbrother out of the building. The police are waiting downstairs."

Two security officers stepped forward, grabbing Julian by the arms. As Julian was dragged out of the boardroom screaming curses, the remaining board members stood up one by one, applauding Arthur’s return.

Arthur looked down at Elena, his heart overflowing with gratitude. The war for his company was won, but the greatest prize was the woman standing by his side.
