Chapter 4 - The Key in the Clock

The storm settled over Hawthorne House like a dark animal.Mara sent the remaining staff home with pay and arranged for two security officers to stay in the east wing. Mrs. Alvarez refused to leave. She had worked in the house for thirty-two years and told Mara that no storm, lawsuit, or Hawthorne could make her abandon Chloe again.“I have a room at the inn,” Mara said.Mrs. Alvarez carried a pot toward the kitchen. “And I have a temper. We all have our burdens.”In the kitchen, Chloe removed her jacket and rolled up her sleeves. Leo sat on the counter, watching her cut potatoes and carrots. The kitchen was larger than the apartment where they had lived for the past three years, but Chloe moved through it cautiously, as if the rooms might reject her.“Can I have the soup in the big room?” Leo asked.“The dining room?”He nodded. “The grand table.”Chloe stopped slicing.“Are you sure?”“I want to sit where you sit.”She looked at Mrs. Alvarez. The older woman’s eyes shone.“Then we’ll eat there,” Chloe said. They carried the soup, bread, and roasted chicken to the center of the long marble table. Mara positioned a security officer near the door, but Chloe asked him to stand outside. The dining room needed witnesses, not guards.Leo climbed into a chair beside her. He ate slowly at first, then faster when he realized no one would take the bowl away.“No one is going to laugh?” he asked.“Not in this house.”“It is still their house.”Chloe reached across the table. “It is ours now.”After dinner, she tucked Leo into the bedroom that had once belonged to Julian. The room was cold and too grand, with dark curtains and a bed carved like a ship. Chloe removed the heavy curtains and opened the door to the adjoining nursery.Mrs. Alvarez brought clean pajamas. “He used to sleep in the servants’ corridor because Eleanor said the nursery was reserved.”Chloe’s throat tightened. “Reserved for whom?”“For an heir who met her standards.”Chloe kissed Leo’s forehead. “Sleep, sweetheart.”When she returned to the hall, Daniel was waiting beside the old grandfather clock.“The mark on the will matches something in the house,” he said.He held the final page beneath a lamp. The hawk-and-key symbol appeared again in the brasswork on the clock’s lower panel.Chloe ran her thumb over it. A hidden latch clicked.Inside was a narrow compartment containing a tarnished brass key, a sealed envelope, and a small wooden box.Her name had been written across the envelope in Augustus’s unmistakable hand.Chloe did not open it immediately.“He planned for this,” Daniel said.“He planned for my return?”“He planned for the possibility that you would be kept away.”She broke the seal. The letter contained only a few lines.Chloe, if this reaches you, the will has been found, but the will is only the door. The truth is under the blue room. Trust no one who tells you the family’s shame must remain private. The first key opens what Eleanor believes is empty. The second key opens what she has never seen.At the bottom, Augustus had added one final sentence.Leo is not the reason they fear losing this house. He is the proof of what they stole.Chloe read it twice.Daniel’s phone rang. He listened, then looked up. “The court archive has reported a break-in attempt.”“The will?”“They didn’t reach it.”“Who tried?”Daniel’s expression was grim. “A man using the name of the attorney who certified the old DNA report.”Chloe looked toward the portrait and the dark hallway leading to the blue study.Leo called from upstairs.“Mom?”She folded Augustus’s letter and slipped it into her pocket.“I’m here,” she answered. But as she climbed the stairs, she understood that the inheritance was not a victory. It was a map drawn through a minefield, and someone had already begun following her footsteps.
