Chapter 16 - The Choice to Stay

Mark moved beside Chloe, but he did not step in front of her.“We need time,” he said quietly. “Keep them talking.”“I know.”The man near the van shouted, “Back away.”Chloe kept her eyes on Leo. “I am here, sweetheart.”Leo pressed his palm to the window.Vivian appeared behind him. Her hair was disordered, and her composure had finally broken.“You ruined everything,” she said.“You made choices.”“Eleanor promised me a future.”“Eleanor promised everyone whatever kept them obedient.”Julian stood several feet away, shaking. “Vivian, let him go.”“You are the reason we are here.”“I told you this was wrong.”“You told me Chloe would surrender.”The conversation confirmed what the officers needed, but Chloe did not know how much time they had.Mark spoke into the small microphone hidden beneath his cuff. “The west entrance is clear. Emergency response is approaching.”“You planned this?” Chloe whispered.“I planned for options.”“Do not turn this into one of your corporate operations.”Mark looked at her. “I am not here to take control. I am here because you asked me to stand beside you.”She had not realized she had asked. Perhaps she had done it years ago, when he gave her Naomi’s name and trusted her with information that could have destroyed his career.“Why did you believe me?” Chloe asked, never taking her eyes from the van.Mark answered quietly. “Because Augustus showed me the hospital receipt.”She glanced at him.“The night Leo was born, you paid the maternity nurse after Eleanor refused to cover the bill. You were exhausted, scared, and still arguing that the nurse deserved to be paid. Augustus saw it. He told me no one who protected a stranger while being abandoned herself would steal an empire.”Chloe’s throat tightened.“He asked me to watch,” Mark continued. “Not control. Watch. When I saw what they were doing, I helped where I could.”“You sent clients to me.”“You earned every one.”Inside the van, Leo began to cry.Chloe took one step forward. The officer beside her murmured, “Not yet.”“Leo,” Chloe called, “can you tell me what you see?”He sniffed. “A red button.”“Good. Is it near the door?”“Yes.”The man near the van turned toward him. “Stop talking.”“He is a child,” Chloe said.“He is leverage.”The word settled over the loading bay.Julian looked at Chloe. “I will get him out.”“No,” she said.“I can.”“You will stay where you are.”He obeyed, and that frightened her more than his earlier defiance.Vivian pushed a folder through the open side window. “Transfer documents. Sign them.”Chloe glanced at the pages. “These are not valid.”“They are valid if you sign.”“No, they are not.”“Then you do not want your son.”Chloe’s voice became calm. “I want my son safe. I will not sign a fraudulent transfer that gives you more people to threaten.”Vivian cursed.Mark shifted his weight. Chloe saw the signal pass between him and Mara.A police cruiser turned into the loading bay.The man near the van reached toward his pocket.Chloe shouted, “Leo, close your eyes!”The officers moved at once. There was no gunfire. No heroic rush. The police used the confusion to separate the man from the vehicle and pull Vivian away from Leo. Mark opened the rear door only after the officers secured the space.Leo ran into Chloe’s arms. She dropped to her knees and held him, counting his breaths.“You came,” he sobbed.“Always.”Behind them, Julian sank against the wall. Vivian screamed that everyone had betrayed her.Mara handcuffed the man and read him his rights. The prosecutor arrived as the final officer secured the loading bay.“Ms. Hawthorne,” she said, “we have warrants for Julian Hawthorne and Vivian Bellamy.”Julian looked at Chloe.“I did not touch him,” he said.Chloe held Leo tighter. “You brought him to the people who did.”The police led Julian away.At the far end of the museum, Eleanor’s car sat beneath the rain. She had watched the entire collapse through tinted glass.
