Chapter 2 - The Woman in Black

Chloe Hawthorne wore a black suit cut close to her shoulders, a white shirt buttoned to the throat, and no jewelry except a plain silver watch. Rain darkened the ends of her hair. Two people followed her: a broad-shouldered woman with an earpiece and a tall man carrying a leather case.Chloe did not look at the guests first. She looked at Leo.“Mom,” he breathed. The bread dropped from his hands.Chloe crossed the room in six strides. She went down on one knee, gathered him against her, and held him so tightly that his sob broke against her shoulder.“I’m here,” she whispered. “I’m here, baby.”Leo wrapped his arms around her neck. “They said I was beneath the table.”Chloe’s eyes lifted. The warmth left her face, but her voice remained steady. “Who said that?”Leo pointed toward Eleanor.Eleanor recovered first. She straightened her jacket and lifted her chin. “You have no right to storm into my dinner.”“Your dinner?” Chloe rose with Leo in her arms. “This is my son’s home.”Julian gave a short, nervous laugh. “Chloe, don’t make a scene.”“A scene?” She looked at the broken glass, the wine-soaked tablecloth, and the phones still recording. “You staged one before I arrived.”Vivian stood. “No one staged anything. The boy caused a disturbance.”Chloe’s gaze settled on her. “You must be Vivian Bellamy.”Vivian’s color shifted. “Julian told me you were unstable.”“Julian tells people what serves him.”“You disappeared for five years,” Eleanor said. “You abandoned this family and now expect to walk back in as if you own it.”Chloe held Leo closer. “I did not disappear. You expelled me while I was pregnant, changed the locks, intercepted my mail, and told every bank in the county that I had no claim on Augustus’s estate.”The room stirred.Eleanor’s smile faltered. “Lies.”“Then you will enjoy seeing the records.”Chloe nodded toward the tall man with the leather case. He placed it on the table where the broken glass had been swept aside. The leather case clicked open.“My name is Daniel Cross,” he said. “I represent Hawthorne Trust Services. The woman beside me is Mara Venn, head of protective operations for Vale Meridian Security.”Julian stared at Chloe. “You hired security?”“I hired people who answer when I call.”Eleanor’s hand tightened around her wineglass. “This is ridiculous theater.”“No.” Chloe set Leo on his feet behind her. “Theater is what you performed for five years. This is the curtain coming down.”Daniel removed a thick file bound with blue ribbon. He placed it on the table with a sound that silenced even the phones.“The estate documents were authenticated this afternoon,” he said. “They include the original final testament of Augustus Hawthorne, a codicil dated eleven days before his death, and a chain-of-custody report from the county archives.”Julian took one step backward.Eleanor’s wineglass trembled.Chloe rested one hand on the file. “You all came here to celebrate the family fortune. I thought you should know who it belongs to.”Curtis Pike lowered his phone. “This is private.”“You filmed my child while he was begging for food,” Chloe said. “You surrendered privacy when you decided humiliation was entertainment.”“You cannot just produce a will,” Eleanor snapped. “It must go through probate.”“It has.”Eleanor’s expression changed.Chloe opened the file. “The probate court accepted the petition this morning. Notice was delivered to your attorney at four forty-two.”Julian looked toward Eleanor. “Mother?”“This is a forgery.”“Then you can prove it in court,” Chloe said. “But tonight, you can stop treating my son like a servant.”Vivian laughed too loudly. “Even if the papers are real, Julian is the heir.”“No,” Daniel said. “He is a beneficiary under the superseded document. The valid testament names Chloe Arden Hawthorne as executor, sole residential owner of Hawthorne House, and controlling shareholder of Hawthorne Group through the Hawthorne Family Trust.”The guests began speaking at once.Leo pressed himself against Chloe’s side. She reached down and took his hand.Eleanor looked at the file as though it had become a weapon. “Augustus would never have done this.”“He did.”“He hated you.”Chloe’s eyes hardened. “He hated what you made this family become.”Julian’s face went pale. “Where did you get it?”“From the person you paid to lose it.”The answer landed harder than the file.Mara stepped toward the dining room entrance. “The exterior team has secured the property. No one leaves with company records, estate documents, or personal files belonging to Chloe or Leo.”Eleanor turned on her. “You think you can remove me from my own house?”Chloe looked around the grand room. “No, Eleanor. I can remove you from mine.”
