Chapter 13 - The Word Father

The next morning, Julian’s attorney filed a request for supervised visitation. Sofia advised Chloe not to oppose it permanently.“The court may want to establish whether a relationship can be repaired,” she said.“A relationship is not owed simply because biology says yes.”“No. But Leo should not be forced to carry an adult decision alone.”Chloe understood. She also understood that five-year-olds could be harmed by being treated as evidence. That afternoon, Celia Wren visited the estate. She spoke to Leo in the library with the door open and a bowl of apple slices between them.“You can tell me anything,” Celia said.Leo studied her. “Do I have to see Julian?”“No one can make you speak to him today.”“What if I never want to?”“Then the adults will listen and help you understand your choices.”Leo took an apple slice. “He let Grandma be mean.”“That sounds important.”“He said Mom was bad.”“How did that make you feel?”Leo’s face tightened. “Small.”After Celia left, Chloe found Leo in the blue study. He was standing beneath the portrait of Augustus, holding a brass key.“Where did you get that?”“It was in the drawer.”Chloe crouched. “We do not touch things in locked rooms without asking.”“I wanted to see if it opened something.”She accepted the key. “We will find out together.”Julian’s supervised visit was scheduled for the following week, but he came to the estate again before then. This time, Chloe met him in the entrance hall.“You cannot keep arriving unannounced.”“I found something.”He took a small envelope from his pocket. “Mother gave me this years ago. She told me to destroy it if you ever came back.”Chloe did not reach for it. “What is it?”“A copy of the second trust agreement.”“Why keep it?”“Because some part of me knew she was lying.”“You kept it while I lived in a rented apartment?”Julian looked at the floor. “I was afraid of her.”“You keep saying that as if fear makes you innocent.”“It does not.”He handed her the envelope. Inside was a map of Hawthorne House and a note in Augustus’s hand. A second vault existed beneath the blue room, accessible through a panel behind the old fireplace. The note named three trustees who could act if Eleanor attempted to interfere with Leo’s inheritance. One trustee was Mark Delaney.“Mark knew,” Chloe said.“He knew Augustus suspected Mother. I knew only that he kept asking questions.”Julian’s expression changed. “There is more.”“What?”“Mother had a copy of the trust ledger. She said it contained names that could destroy the company.”“Where is it?”“I do not know.”“You had it?”“For one night. I took it from her desk after the false report. I was going to tell you, but Vivian found me.”Chloe’s voice went quiet. “What did she do?”“She told me Mother had enough evidence to make me a criminal too.”He had spent five years choosing silence.“If the ledger still exists,” Julian said, “they will do anything to keep it hidden.”That evening, Leo asked why Julian had come.“He wanted to give us information,” Chloe said.“Is he going to be my dad now?”Chloe sat beside him on the bed. “That decision belongs to you.”Leo pulled the blanket to his chin. “I have one mom.”“Yes.”“I can have one mom and maybe a dad later.”“Maybe.”“But not if he makes me feel small.”Chloe kissed his hair. “That is a good boundary.”In the quiet that followed, she realized the word boundary was not one Leo should have needed at five. Still, he had found it. She would help him keep it.Downstairs, Mark and Naomi opened the panel behind the fireplace. The cavity was empty except for a black envelope.Inside was a photograph of Eleanor standing with a man Chloe did not recognize. On the back, Augustus had written: The person who taught her how to hide the money is closer than we think.
