Chapter 6 - The Photograph in Clara's SafeClara had left another secret.

Rebecca discovered it while reviewing the trust.

A safe-deposit box.

Alexander had never opened it.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

And a document written six weeks before Clara's death.

Alexander read the first line twice.

If anything happens to me, do not let Thomas Vale become involved in Lily's trust.

He nearly dropped the page.

Clara knew Thomas.

She had suspected him years earlier.

Before her fatal car accident.

Clara had discovered financial irregularities inside Reed Development.

Small at the time.

Thomas convinced Alexander they were accounting mistakes.

Alexander sided with Thomas.

He remembered the argument.

Clara told him:

“You trust people who make your life easier.”

He responded:

“And you suspect everyone.”

That had been their final serious fight.

Three weeks later she died in a car accident.

The official report found driver error on wet pavement.

Alexander's hands began shaking.

He called Detective Russo.

The case was reopened.

Investigators examined archived vehicle records.

Clara's brake system showed no sabotage.

But her car's navigation logs had been altered.

Someone sent her to a rural road she did not normally use.

Why?

Thomas eventually admitted it.

He had arranged a meeting.

Not to kill Clara.

To convince her not to report him.

She never reached the location.

Her accident was genuine.

Thomas had not murdered her.

But his lies placed her on that road.

Alexander struggled with the distinction.

Legally important.

Emotionally devastating.

Vanessa had discovered Clara's suspicions after finding documents in Alexander's old files.

That was how she knew Thomas could be compromised.

Dead woman's warning.

Living people's arrogance.

Again.

Alexander sat beside Lily one evening.

She was painting.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Was Mommy scared before she died?”

The question caught him.

“I don't know.”

“Vanessa said Mommy died because she was careless.”

Alexander sat beside her.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Sometimes accidents happen.”

He paused.

“Sometimes adults also make decisions that put other people in difficult situations.”

Lily looked confused.

Good.

She did not need the entire corporate history at seven.

“Did Mommy love me?”

“More than anything.”

“How do you know?”

Alexander showed her Clara's letters.

One was addressed to Lily.

Written before the accident.

My sweet girl,

If you ever wonder whether you were loved before you could remember it, the answer is yes. Completely. Loudly. Ridiculously.

Lily laughed.

“Mommy wrote ridiculously?”

“She used terrible language.”

Lily hugged the letter.

Alexander looked at his daughter's face.

Clara everywhere.

Vanessa had seen a rival.

Alexander now saw a gift.

The criminal investigation moved forward.

Vanessa faced charges involving child abuse, financial conspiracy, evidence falsification and obstruction.

Attempt-related charges tied to Alexander's car were still under review.

Thomas accepted a plea agreement.

In exchange, he provided financial ledgers and recordings.

Some people criticized the deal.

Alexander did not celebrate it.

Accountability was messy.

He had learned that justice was not a story where every bad person received the exact amount of suffering readers wanted.

It was evidence.

Process.

Protection.

Repair.

And limits.

Dr. Hart said something similar during family therapy.

“Your goal isn't to make Lily fearless.”

Alexander frowned.

“Why not?”

“Because fear is useful.”

She smiled.

“Your goal is to teach her she can feel fear and still tell someone.”

Alexander thought of the bruises hidden beneath gray sleeves.

“How do I do that?”

“Believe her.”

Simple.

Devastating.

Alexander began practicing.

When Lily said she did not want a certain babysitter, he asked why.

When she said she wanted her bedroom door open, he left it open.

When she said she did not want to discuss Vanessa, he stopped asking.

Safety was not control in reverse.

It was choice returning.
