Held Lily when Alexander could not stop crying.

Now his voice was on Vanessa's tablet discussing Lily as an “obstacle.”
Alexander wanted to confront him immediately.
Rebecca refused.
“Police first.”
Detective Lena Russo arrived before dawn.
The financial angle changed everything.
Thomas owned debt.
A lot of it.
Vanessa had even more.
Hidden gambling losses.
Private loans.
Luxury purchases financed through shell companies.
Together they owed almost twenty million dollars.
The Lily Reed Trust represented a solution neither could legally access.
Unless circumstances changed.
Detective Russo asked:
“Were you aware your wife had these debts?”
“No.”
“Did you sign joint financial guarantees?”
Alexander stared.
“I signed things she brought me.”
Rebecca turned slowly toward him.
Alexander already knew what she was thinking.
The man who reviewed billion-dollar developments had signed personal papers without reading them.
Trust.
The oldest vulnerability.
Forensic accountants discovered that Vanessa had used Alexander's signature to guarantee several loans.
Thomas arranged the transactions.
If the loans defaulted, lenders could potentially pursue marital assets.
Still not Lily's trust.
So Vanessa needed more.
Guardianship.
Trust distributions.
Control.
But another question remained.
Why hurt Lily?
The recordings provided the answer.
Not all injuries were planned.
Vanessa was angry.
Jealous.
Resentful.
Clara's photograph remained in the penthouse.
Lily spoke about her mother.
Alexander funded a children's hospital in Clara's name.
Vanessa lived in a marriage where a dead woman still occupied emotional space.
Instead of confronting Alexander, she punished the easiest person.
The child who looked like Clara.
It was both more ordinary and more horrifying than a grand financial conspiracy.
Money supplied motive for the cover-up.
Jealousy supplied cruelty.
Alexander sat alone after the detectives left.
He looked at Clara's portrait.
“I failed her.”
Ethan stood behind him.
“Who?”
“Both of them.”
“Alexander.”
“I saw Lily getting quiet.”
“You asked.”
“And accepted Vanessa's answer.”
“You were manipulated.”
Alexander turned.
“Manipulation doesn't erase negligence.”
Ethan had no response.
That became important later.
Alexander refused to cast himself purely as rescuer.
For nearly a year, he had allowed work and grief to make him inattentive.
He had not caused the abuse.
But he had missed signs.
That was his responsibility to repair.
The police searched Vanessa's hotel room.
They found forged financial documents.
Dr. Krell's draft evaluations.
A boarding-school application.
And a folder labeled:
POST-ALEXANDER PLAN
Inside was a sequence.
If Alexander died or became incapacitated, Vanessa would petition for guardianship.
Thomas would temporarily stabilize Reed Development.
Trust funds could be sought for Lily's “special therapeutic needs.”
Eventually Lily would be moved to a residential program.
Detective Russo stared at Alexander.
“Do you have any medical problems?”
“No.”
“Any recent accidents?”
Alexander thought.
Three months earlier.
Brake failure.
His Bentley stopped responding while descending a parking garage.
Technicians blamed a hydraulic fault.
One month later, food poisoning before a major board vote.
Then another memory.
Vanessa insisting he increase his life-insurance policy.
His skin went cold.
Police reopened the brake investigation.
A mechanic found something missed initially.
The line had been deliberately damaged.
Vanessa's charges became more serious.
So did Thomas's.
But Thomas disappeared.
His apartment was empty.
Phone abandoned.
Company access card disabled.
Then Alexander received a message.
DON'T GO TO THE OFFICE TOMORROW.
Unknown number.
Another message followed.
THE GIRL IS NOT THE ONLY TARGET.
Alexander showed Detective Russo.
She told him to stay home.
He agreed.
Then someone inside Reed Development scheduled an emergency board meeting without him.
Agenda:
TEMPORARY REMOVAL OF ALEXANDER REED FOR MEDICAL INSTABILITY.
