Chapter 1 - The Bruise Beneath the Gray SleeveAlexander Reed had built forty-three luxury towers across Manhattan, but on the evening he finally understood what was happening inside his own home, he realized he had failed to protect the only person who truly mattered.

His daughter.

Seven-year-old Lily.

Alexander stepped into the forty-sixth-floor penthouse shortly after six, almost three hours earlier than expected.

His wife, Vanessa, did not know he was coming home.

That mattered.

The apartment was strangely quiet.

No piano.

No television.

No childish laughter.

Only the faint hum of the ventilation system and Vanessa's sharp voice drifting from the far end of the hallway.

“I told you not to touch it.”

Alexander stopped.

Another sound followed.

A frightened little gasp.

Then:

“I'm sorry.”

Lily.

Alexander's expression changed.

He walked toward the playroom.

Vanessa spoke again.

“You're always sorry after you've ruined something.”

“Please don't tell Daddy.”

Alexander froze outside the door.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You think your father wants to hear about every stupid thing you do?”

Silence.

Then Lily whispered:

“No.”

“Exactly.”

Alexander pushed open the door.

Vanessa spun around.

Lily stood near the wall wearing a thick gray sweater despite the apartment being warm.

A broken ceramic horse lay on the floor.

Vanessa's hand was gripping Lily's upper arm.

Hard.

Too hard.

“Alexander!”

Vanessa released her instantly.

“What are you doing home?”

Alexander didn't answer.

He looked at Lily.

She refused to meet his eyes.

“Sweetheart.”

Nothing.

He stepped toward her.

Lily flinched.

Not slightly.

Her entire body recoiled.

Alexander stopped.

That movement went through him like a knife.

“Lily?”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“She knows she's in trouble. She knocked over Clara's horse.”

Alexander looked at the shattered figure.

It had belonged to Lily's mother, Clara, who died three years earlier.

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't mean to.”

Alexander knelt.

“I'm not angry.”

Lily glanced at Vanessa.

That glance told him more than anything else.

Alexander extended his hand.

“Come here.”

She hesitated.

Then slowly approached.

He noticed she held her left arm strangely.

“Does something hurt?”

Vanessa interrupted.

“She fell yesterday.”

Alexander looked up.

“I asked Lily.”

Vanessa stiffened.

Lily whispered:

“My arm.”

“Can I see?”

She shook her head.

“Why?”

Her lips trembled.

“Because she'll get mad.”

The room became silent.

Alexander slowly turned toward Vanessa.

She crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.”

Alexander looked back at Lily.

“Who will get mad?”

Lily began crying.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Enough. She's been testing boundaries all week.”

Alexander raised one hand.

“Don't come closer.”

Vanessa stopped.

Alexander gently pushed Lily's sleeve upward.

He expected a scraped elbow.

Instead he found bruises around her forearm.

Finger-shaped.

Some purple.

Some already fading yellow.

Not one incident.

Several.

Alexander's breathing changed.

“Lily.”

She looked down.

“Who did this?”

Vanessa spoke.

“She bruises easily.”

Alexander didn't look at her.

“Lily.”

His daughter started shaking.

“I'm clumsy.”

“Who told you to say that?”

Vanessa snapped:

“Alexander!”

Lily immediately covered her head with both arms.

“I'm sorry!”

Alexander stared.

His daughter was protecting her face.

From a raised voice.

Inside her own home.

He stood slowly.

The anger came so powerfully he almost welcomed it.

But he did not shout.

He picked Lily up instead.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you sending me away?”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“What?”

Vanessa went pale.

Lily buried her face in his shoulder.

“She said you wanted a new family.”

Alexander looked at his wife.

Vanessa backed toward the window.

“She misunderstood.”

Lily continued:

“She said I make you remember Mommy and you don't like looking at me.”

Alexander nearly lost his ability to speak.

He held his daughter tighter.

“You listen to me.”

Lily looked up.

“There is nowhere in this world I want you to go except somewhere safe.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“Pack a bag.”

Vanessa stared.

“You cannot be serious.”

“You have ten minutes.”

“This is my home.”

“No.”

Alexander's voice was terrifyingly quiet.

“This is Lily's home.”

Vanessa laughed in disbelief.

“You're throwing your wife out because a child has bruises?”

Alexander's eyes went cold.

“I am removing an adult from the home until a doctor tells me why my daughter has repeated injuries shaped like someone's fingers.”

“You'll regret humiliating me.”

Alexander turned toward the hallway.

“Marcus.”

His security chief appeared.

Vanessa stared.

“Alexander.”

He looked back.

“Do not touch my daughter again.”

Vanessa's expression changed.

The panic disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

“Fine.”

She picked up her handbag.

“But before you start playing heroic father, perhaps you should ask why Lily's mother created a trust that doesn't allow you full control of her inheritance.”

Alexander stopped.

Vanessa smiled.

“There are things Clara never told you.”

Lily tightened her arms around his neck.

“What trust?”

Vanessa picked up her coat.

“Ask your lawyers.”

Then she walked out.

Alexander watched the door close.

He believed he had just discovered the worst secret in his house.

He was wrong.

The bruises were only the first layer.
