With police approval.
And a wire.
Directors stared when he walked into the room.
Several looked relieved.
Others terrified.
Thomas's empty chair remained near the far end.
Board member Richard Sloane spoke first.
“Alexander, this meeting concerns your wellbeing.”
Alexander sat.
“How compassionate.”
“We've received information suggesting your judgment has deteriorated.”
“From whom?”
Silence.
Alexander placed Vanessa's false psychiatric petition on the table.
“This?”
Richard swallowed.
“We had concerns before that.”
“Name one.”
Nobody did.
Then Rebecca entered.
Alongside Detective Russo.
The room changed.
Alexander addressed the board.
“My daughter was injured repeatedly inside my home.”
Several directors looked shocked.
“I will not provide details because she is seven years old and deserves privacy.”
He continued.
“My wife then created false psychiatric evidence against both my daughter and me while attempting to gain control over family assets.”
Richard interrupted:
“This is inappropriate for a corporate meeting.”
Alexander looked at him.
“No. What's inappropriate is that company executives assisted her.”
The doors opened.
Federal financial investigators entered.
Richard stood.
“What is this?”
Search warrants.
Company servers were seized.
Account access frozen.
Thomas's communications revealed a network of side deals.
Kickbacks.
Fake development consulting fees.
Illegal loans.
Vanessa's scheme was attached to a broader corporate fraud.
She had not seduced Thomas into crime.
He had already been stealing.
They simply recognized mutual usefulness.
Alexander realized his company was sicker than his marriage.
The investigation uncovered forty-six million dollars diverted from development projects.
Three senior executives were implicated.
Richard Sloane among them.
The same people calling Alexander unstable were trying to remove him before the fraud surfaced.
Richard was arrested that afternoon.
Thomas remained missing.
Vanessa was arrested at her hotel.
Her attorney, Julian Cross, initially described the allegations as a “vindictive marital narrative.”
Then prosecutors showed him the tablet recordings.
He stopped giving interviews.
Dr. Krell was arrested for falsifying medical records and conspiracy-related offenses.
News coverage became overwhelming.
Alexander made one public statement.
“My daughter will not be used as content in an adult scandal. I ask the media to leave her name, school and image out of coverage.”
Several outlets respected it.
Some did not.
Alexander sued one tabloid after it published Lily's school photograph.
He won.
At home, he took indefinite leave.
Lily asked:
“Are you fired?”
“No.”
“Then why are you home?”
“Because I was working too much.”
She considered.
“So now your job is me?”
Alexander smiled.
“For a while.”
“Do I pay you?”
“Terrible salary.”
She giggled.
Healing arrived in moments like that.
But fear remained.
Lily still woke from nightmares.
Still apologized constantly.
Still hid food occasionally because Vanessa once withheld dessert as punishment and later entire meals.
Alexander hired trauma therapist Dr. Evelyn Hart.
The first session was mostly silence.
The second involved drawing.
By the fifth, Lily said:
“Vanessa was nicer when Daddy was home.”
Dr. Hart asked:
“What happened when he left?”
Lily drew a black square.
Then another.
Then a small yellow figure in the corner.
Alexander saw the drawing later and had to leave the room to cry.
Healing was not a triumphant montage.
It was learning what happened after you thought the danger ended.
Then came another blow.
Police found Thomas Vale.
Not fleeing the country.
In a private hospital in Connecticut.
He had suffered severe injuries after driving off a rural road.
He claimed accident.
Detective Russo did not believe him.
Thomas finally agreed to cooperate.
He said Vanessa had not planned only Alexander's removal from the company.
She wanted permanent control.
“How?” Russo asked.
Thomas stared at the table.
“Through Lily.”
“What does that mean?”
Thomas whispered:
“If Alexander died, Vanessa needed the girl alive until the trust transferred authority.”
Alexander felt sick.
“And afterward?”
Thomas would not answer.
He didn't need to.
