Chapter 6 - The Child Eleanor Kept

Ethan pressed play himself.

Richard’s recorded voice returned.

“The child Eleanor kept was a baby girl.”

Claire’s heart pounded.

“She was born to a seventeen-year-old woman who was told her daughter had died shortly after delivery.”

Richard paused on the tape.

“The baby did not die.”

“Eleanor took her.”

Claire looked down at the photograph of Eleanor holding an infant.

The date on the back was Claire’s birthday.

Nathan whispered.

“Claire…”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Richard continued.

“Rebecca discovered the falsified death certificate.”

“She confronted Eleanor.”

“Eleanor told her she was protecting the child.”

“But Rebecca knew the truth.”

“Eleanor wanted leverage over the child’s biological father.”

Claire could barely breathe.

Richard’s next words struck harder than the balcony fall.

“The child was Claire.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Claire stood.

“That can’t be true.”

Ethan reached for her.

She stepped away.

“My mother was my mother.”

Richard’s tape answered her.

“Rebecca was not Claire’s biological mother.”

“She became her mother when she refused to let Eleanor use the child as a weapon.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Everything Rebecca had done suddenly carried a different meaning.

She had not run to protect herself.

She had run carrying someone else’s baby.

Claire sank into a chair.

Nathan looked sick.

Ethan rewound the tape.

“What leverage?”

They listened again.

Richard said the biological father came from a family that Eleanor believed would eventually control enormous political and financial influence.

But Richard never named him.

Instead, he said he had hidden proof in a place Eleanor could never legally access.

The recording ended.

Claire stared at the machine.

“I spent thirty-three years believing Rebecca gave birth to me.”

Ethan sat beside her.

“She raised you.”

“That part was real.”

Claire wiped her eyes.

“But who was the seventeen-year-old girl?”

Nathan looked toward the ledger from Rebecca’s music box.

They opened it.

Rows of payments filled the pages.

Dates.

Doctors.

Private clinics.

Initials.

Near Claire’s birthday, one line had been circled in red.

Patient: A.M.

Infant: female.

Status: deceased.

Transfer authorization: E.V.

Claire touched the initials.

“Eleanor Vale.”

Ethan nodded.

Then Nathan found a folded piece of paper between the ledger pages.

It was a photocopy of a birth certificate.

The mother’s full name was visible.

Anna Mercer.

Claire had never heard the name.

But Ethan had.

His expression changed instantly.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“Anna Mercer became Anna Whitmore.”

Claire waited.

Ethan turned pale.

“Senator Anna Whitmore.”

Claire stared at him.

The woman who had spent the past decade appearing on national television was not simply connected to Eleanor.

According to Rebecca’s records, she might be Claire’s biological mother.
