Chapter 19 - The Point of No Return

Michael locked himself inside the archive.
He carried gasoline.
He also carried a gun.
Police surrounded the floor.
Claire watched from the security center.
Michael called her directly.
“You inherited billions.”
“I inherited nothing.”
Claire answered.
“You inherited your father’s choices.”
“He abandoned me.”
“So you decided to become him.”
Michael laughed.
“You sound like Rebecca.”
Claire’s hand tightened around the phone.
“You killed her.”
Silence.
That was answer enough.
Michael admitted he had visited Rebecca seeking the files.
She refused.
He tampered with her medication hoping fear would change her mind.
Instead, she became weaker.
By the time he understood how much he had given her, the damage was irreversible.
Claire closed her eyes.
“You murdered my mother.”
“I didn’t mean to kill her.”
Claire heard Rebecca’s voice in her memory.
Intent did not erase consequences.
Michael demanded ten million dollars and safe passage.
Otherwise, he would burn the archive.
Hale whispered that officers were moving into position.
Claire kept Michael talking.
“Those documents are already copied.”
“Not all of them.”
Michael sounded pleased.
“There’s a sealed Carrington ledger nobody has opened.”
Samuel Price turned pale.
Claire looked at him.
“What ledger?”
Price whispered.
David Carrington had kept private records of political payments made by Charles Vale.
If Michael destroyed them, powerful people could escape investigation.
Claire understood why he wanted money.
He planned to sell the ledger to the people named inside it.
Michael opened the sealed cabinet.
Then stopped speaking.
Claire heard paper moving.
“What?”
Michael breathed heavily.
“My name.”
Claire frowned.
“What about it?”
“My name is in here.”
David had investigated Michael years earlier.
According to the ledger, Charles had not merely abandoned his illegitimate son.
He had used him.
At eighteen, Michael had been ordered to deliver cash to judges and doctors involved in the adoption network.
Michael had unknowingly become part of his father’s crimes.
Claire heard him begin to break.
“My whole life…”
Claire interrupted.
“You still get to choose what happens next.”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You think choice fixes anything?”
“No.”
“It decides what you become after learning the truth.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Michael put down the gasoline container.
Police moved.
A shot rang out.
Claire screamed Ethan’s name even though he was standing beside her.
The security monitor went black.
Seconds felt like minutes.
Then Hale’s radio crackled.
“Suspect in custody.”
“Archive secure.”
“Officer injured, conscious.”
Claire closed her eyes.
It was over.
Or she thought it was.
An hour later, Hale emerged carrying the Carrington ledger.
“We found something you need to see.”
The final page contained a payment made only seven months earlier.
Charles Vale had been dead for twelve years.
Michael had been working for someone else.
Someone who had paid him shortly before Rebecca died.
The account belonged to Blackwood Holdings.
Ethan stared at the page.
May you like
Only one person had controlled that account seven months earlier.
Nathan.
