Chapter 17 - Eleanor Before Eleanor

The discovery did not excuse Eleanor.
Claire knew that immediately.
But it explained something no one expected.
Eleanor had been born Elizabeth Carter.
Her mother was a domestic worker named June Carter.
Charles Vale and his wife had been unable to have children.
When June died under suspicious circumstances, Charles arranged paperwork claiming the infant was legally adopted.
There was no adoption order.
No consent.
No court record.
Charles simply took the child and renamed her Eleanor Vale.
Richard had discovered this late in life.
He believed Eleanor’s obsession with controlling children and families began with the truth she refused to face about herself.
Ethan sat inside the cabin staring at the file.
“My mother became the thing that happened to her.”
Claire shook her head.
“She chose to.”
That mattered.
Trauma explained.
It did not absolve.
Another document showed Richard had planned to tell Eleanor the truth before his death.
Charles learned about the meeting.
Richard died the next day.
Claire realized Charles may have killed Richard partly to prevent Eleanor from discovering her origin.
Then Hale called.
They had found Eleanor.
She was not hiding.
She had entered a hospital under the name Elizabeth Carter.
Claire felt a chill.
“Why?”
“She collapsed.”
Eleanor had suffered a cardiac episode while fleeing through the river tunnel.
She was stable.
And asking for Claire.
Ethan did not want Claire to go.
Claire went anyway.
Eleanor looked smaller in the hospital bed.
No designer clothes.
No perfect posture.
No mansion behind her.
Only an old woman connected to machines.
Claire placed a copy of Elizabeth Carter’s birth certificate on the table.
Eleanor stared at it.
Her face broke.
“You found it.”
“You knew?”
“Richard told me three days before he died.”
Claire sat.
“So Charles stole you.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“He called it adoption.”
“You knew it wasn’t.”
“Yes.”
Claire waited.
Eleanor whispered.
“When I learned what he did to me, I could have exposed him.”
“I didn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because then I would have lost everything.”
The Vale name.
The inheritance.
The social status.
The identity she had built.
Claire understood.
Eleanor’s first great crime had been silence.
Every crime after that had protected the first.
Eleanor looked at Claire.
“I hated you because Rebecca did what I was too cowardly to do.”
Claire said nothing.
“She walked away.”
“She gave up money.”
“Safety.”
“Everything.”
“To protect a child who wasn’t hers.”
Tears rolled down Eleanor’s face.
“I spent my entire life telling myself she was a fool.”
Claire stood.
“No.”
“You spent your life knowing she was better than you.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Then she whispered.
“There’s one last thing Rebecca never told you.”
Claire stopped.
May you like
Eleanor looked at her.
“Rebecca didn’t die from cancer.”
