Chapter 11 - Eleanor's Last Bargain

Claire’s blood turned cold.
“She took Anna.”
Hale immediately issued an alert.
Ethan blamed himself for not arranging more security.
Claire refused to let him.
“This is Eleanor.”
“She planned ahead.”
Two hours later, Claire received a message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Anna sat inside a dark room.
Her wrists were bound.
She was alive.
Below the photograph was one sentence.
BRING RICHARD’S FILES ALONE.
Ethan read it.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“She has my mother.”
“She has one of your mothers.”
Ethan corrected himself gently.
“Rebecca was your mother too.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
That distinction mattered.
Anna had given Claire life.
Rebecca had given her a life.
Claire would not choose between them.
Hale traced the message to a disposable phone.
No location.
Samuel Price believed Eleanor wanted the eleven files destroyed before authorities could authenticate them.
Claire had another idea.
They scanned every document.
Copies went to Hale.
Price.
Federal investigators.
Three separate law firms.
A secure server.
Then Claire placed the originals in Richard’s metal case.
“If she wants these, she can have them.”
Ethan stared at her.
“The evidence already exists elsewhere.”
“Exactly.”
They waited.
A second message arrived.
MIDNIGHT.
VALE TEXTILE MILL.
ALONE.
The abandoned Vale mill stood forty miles outside Boston.
It had once belonged to Charles Vale.
Hale objected to Claire going inside.
Claire insisted.
They compromised.
Claire would enter wearing a hidden transmitter.
Police would remain outside.
At 11:58 p.m., Claire stepped through the rusted mill doors.
Anna sat beneath a hanging light.
Eleanor stood behind her.
No gun.
Only a small metal box and a lighter.
Claire placed Richard’s files on the floor.
“Let her go.”
Eleanor smiled.
“You look so much like David.”
Claire felt anger rise.
“You knew my father?”
“Knew him?”
Eleanor laughed softly.
“I loved him.”
Everything stopped.
Eleanor walked closer.
“I loved David Carrington before your mother ever met him.”
Claire stared at her.
“That’s what this was about?”
“At first.”
Eleanor’s face twisted.
“Then he chose Anna.”
“He was twenty-five.”
“She was seventeen.”
“He promised he would wait for her.”
“And you punished their baby.”
Eleanor’s smile disappeared.
“I created an opportunity.”
“You stole me.”
“I gave you a mother who loved you.”
“Rebecca loved me despite you.”
That struck Eleanor harder than Claire expected.
Then Eleanor whispered something shocking.
“Rebecca wasn’t supposed to escape.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What did you do?”
Eleanor looked directly at her.
“The night Rebecca took you, my father ordered her killed.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“And Richard?”
“He helped her disappear.”
Claire finally understood why Rebecca had lived afraid for decades.
Then Eleanor opened the metal box beside her.

Inside was the missing final page from Richard’s letter.
And what it revealed would change Ethan’s understanding of his father forever.
