Chapter 8 - The Papers That Would Have Taken Everything

Lucas read the refinancing agreement at his office while Claire sat across from him, trying not to look at the framed photographs on the wall. His firm had a view of downtown, but Claire kept seeing only the little blue box hidden in her bedroom drawer.

“The LLC is controlled by Ethan,” Lucas said. “The house would no longer be marital property in any meaningful sense.”

“Meaning?”

“If Ethan defaults, the lender takes the house. If you divorce, he argues that the house belongs to the company, not the marriage. If the company files bankruptcy, the property is exposed.”

Claire stared at the signature line.

“And if I sign?”

“You make his argument stronger.”

“So the papers would take everything.”

“They would give him the ability to risk everything without your consent.”

Claire closed the folder. “I’m not signing.”

“Good.”

“I need him to believe I’m considering it.”

Lucas leaned back. “That is dangerous.”

“So is confronting him without evidence.”

He studied her. “You’ve changed.”

“I had to.”

At home, Claire told Ethan she needed a few days to review the agreement. He looked irritated but accepted the delay because he believed he still had control.

“You don’t have to make everything a battle,” he said.

“Then stop bringing me weapons disguised as paperwork.”

He left the room.

That evening, Claire heard his voice from the office. The door was closed, but the walls were thin.

“She’s getting suspicious,” Ethan said.

Claire froze in the hallway.

There was a pause.

Vanessa’s voice answered through the phone speaker. “Then stop asking. Make her sign.”

“She won’t.”

“You said she would.”

“I said I could handle it.”

“You have a week before the lender calls the note.”

Claire slipped her phone from her pocket and began recording. She held her breath as Ethan paced across the office.

“My mother said the pregnancy issue—”

He stopped abruptly.

Claire’s pulse jumped.

Vanessa spoke sharply. “What pregnancy issue?”

“Nothing.”

“Ethan.”

“I said nothing.”

“If she is pregnant, you need to tell me.”

Claire pressed the phone closer to the door.

Ethan lowered his voice. “She isn’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because we stopped trying.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“Vanessa, the papers come first.”

“No. The transfer comes first. Then the company belongs to us.”

Claire’s hand tightened around the phone.

The call ended. Ethan remained in the office for several minutes. When he came out, Claire was sitting at the kitchen table with a book open in front of her.

“Who was that?” she asked.

“A lender.”

“Did they sound romantic?”

His face darkened. “You’re obsessed.”

“I’m observant.”

“You need to sign those papers.”

“I need to understand them.”

“You never cared about business before.”

“I cared enough to leave my career and help you build yours.”

“You chose that.”

“I chose us.”

He laughed without humor. “There is no us if you keep acting like an adversary.”

Claire looked at him carefully. “Maybe you should have thought about that before you made me one.”

He slammed his hand on the counter.

Claire did not flinch.

Ethan noticed. His anger shifted into something more cautious.

“You’re recording me now?” he asked.

The question was a guess, but it confirmed that he feared what she knew.

Claire lifted her book. “Do you hear a recording?”

He stared at her for a long moment.

Then he went upstairs.

Claire waited until the bedroom door closed before sending the audio file to Lucas and Noah.

Lucas replied first.

This is useful. Do not tell Ethan you have it.

Noah wrote: Come stay with me.

Claire looked at the staircase. Her marriage had become a house full of locked doors, forged signatures, and conversations that stopped when she entered.

She placed one hand over her abdomen.

“Not yet,” she whispered. “We’re not running yet.”

Upstairs, Ethan made another call.

“She’s not going to sign,” he said. “We need a different plan.”
