Chapter 18 - The Mistress Turns on Him

Ethan found Vanessa in the legal conference room the next morning. She sat at the end of the table, reading a document as if he were late to an appointment.

“You knew,” he said.

Vanessa did not look up. “About what?”

“Richard.”

She turned a page. “I know many people.”

“You were meeting him.”

“Yes.”

The calm admission stunned him.

“You’re working with him.”

“I was.”

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa closed the folder. “It means you were useful.”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists. “I gave you everything.”

“You gave me access.”

“I loved you.”

“You loved the way I made you feel powerful.”

He stepped closer. “You helped destroy my company.”

“Your company was already destroyed. I helped position the assets.”

“For Richard.”

“For whoever controlled the debt.”

“You were going to marry me.”

“I was going to marry the position you occupied.”

The words stripped away the last of his certainty.

Ethan looked at the folders on the table. “What did my mother promise you?”

“A permanent role in the restructured company. Authority over legal affairs. A share of the management entity.”

“And Richard?”

“He promised a future in which you were no longer in charge.”

Ethan stared at her.

Vanessa leaned back. “Margaret believed Richard could keep the family assets intact. She thought you were too reckless to manage them.”

“My mother planned this?”

“Your mother encouraged it.”

“She knew about the transfers.”

“She approved the structure.”

“The loan?”

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation answered him.

“You helped use Claire’s signature.”

“I prepared documents. Ethan, you were the one who completed the verification.”

He stepped backward.

“You told me to make her sign.”

“Because you said she would.”

“You said the house needed to move before the baby.”

Vanessa’s expression changed. “So she is pregnant.”

Ethan looked at her with disgust. “You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You asked me what would happen.”

“I wanted to know whether the trust would affect my position.”

He laughed bitterly. “You never loved me.”

“You never loved Claire.”

The sentence landed because it was true.

Ethan’s phone rang again. This time, the caller was the bank.

“Mr. Cole,” a man said, “several accounts are under review pending documentation regarding suspected unauthorized transfers.”

“You can’t freeze my company.”

“The board has requested an independent review.”

“I need access to payroll.”

“A temporary operating account has been established.”

“Who authorized that?”

“The board.”

Ethan ended the call and looked at Vanessa.

“You did this.”

“No,” she said. “Your numbers did.”

He left the building and drove to Margaret’s house. She opened the door wearing a robe, her face drained of color.

“You knew,” Ethan said.

“I knew Richard was prepared to protect the assets.”

“You let Vanessa use me.”

“You were destroying everything.”

“You let her use me!”

Margaret’s expression hardened. “I was trying to save the family.”

“I am the family.”

“You are my son. That does not make you capable.”

He stared at her as if he had never heard the words before.

“Claire was right,” he said. “You never saw me as a person.”

Margaret looked away.

His phone buzzed with a message from his attorney.

The board had suspended him as CEO.

Vanessa had been terminated from the company.

The lender had referred the matter to investigators.

Ethan stood in his mother’s entryway, holding the phone between both hands.

For years, he had believed betrayal was something he could control by betraying first.

Now every door he had opened was closing at once.
