Chapter 17 - They Tried to Buy Her Silence

The agreement arrived the next afternoon in a black folder delivered by a courier. Ethan did not hand it to Claire. He left it on the kitchen table beside a vase of white roses.

Margaret came an hour later.

“This is a generous offer,” she said.

Claire sat across from her with Lucas beside her. He had not spoken since Margaret entered, but his presence changed the balance of the room.

“Two million dollars,” Margaret continued. “The house remains yours. Ethan receives a structured visitation arrangement, and you retain primary custody.”

“What do you want?” Claire asked.

Margaret glanced at Lucas. “A private resolution.”

Lucas opened the folder. “The agreement requires Claire to withdraw the fraud complaint, waive all claims against the company, accept confidentiality, and surrender the child’s rights under the Cole Family Trust.”

“That last clause is standard,” Margaret said.

“It is not,” Lucas replied.

Ethan entered from the hall. He looked tired, his shirt wrinkled and his eyes shadowed.

“We’re trying to protect everyone,” he said.

Claire looked at him. “You’re trying to buy your own child out of an inheritance.”

“I’m trying to prevent a legal war.”

“You created one.”

“The trust will destroy the family if it becomes public.”

“Then your family should have thought about that before it tried to erase me.”

Margaret leaned forward. “You have no idea what a lawsuit will do to a child.”

“My child will have a mother who protects her.”

“Her?” Ethan said.

Claire looked at him. “I don’t know yet.”

He flinched at the word as if he had imagined a son who would restore the family name.

Lucas tapped the agreement. “The child’s rights cannot be waived by a private contract without court review.”

“Everything can be negotiated,” Margaret said.

“Not everything.”

Claire picked up the folder and tore it in half.

Margaret stood abruptly. “You’ll regret this.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Two million dollars is more than you could earn in years.”

“I’ll earn my own money.”

Ethan’s voice broke through. “You don’t even have a career anymore.”

Claire looked at him with quiet disbelief.

“I built yours.”

He said nothing.

She gathered the torn pages and placed them in the recycling bin.

“I’m filing for divorce,” she said.

Ethan’s face changed. “Today?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

“You can’t do this while the company is under investigation.”

“Your investigation is not my marriage.”

Margaret moved toward the door. “Ethan, we need to discuss Vanessa.”

He turned sharply. “What about her?”

Margaret looked at Claire. “She has been meeting Richard.”

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at his mother. “You knew?”

“I knew she had business contacts.”

“You knew she was working with him.”

Margaret did not answer.

Claire watched Ethan’s anger gather, but she did not feel satisfaction. He had believed he was using Vanessa. Now he was discovering that he had been useful to her.

Ethan called Vanessa from the driveway. She answered on the first ring.

“Come to the office,” he said.

“No.”

“You will come.”

“You don’t give me orders anymore.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means you should read your own contracts.”

She ended the call.

Ethan stood beneath the porch light, staring at the dead screen.

Claire watched from the window.

For the first time since she had met him, Ethan looked alone.

Then his phone rang again.

The bank’s number appeared on the screen.

He answered.

His face went pale.

“What do you mean the account is restricted?”
