Chapter 3 - The Wife Who Pretended Not to Know

Claire returned home at eight the next morning with a calm expression and a folder tucked beneath her coat.

Ethan was waiting in the kitchen. He had changed his shirt, shaved, and arranged a cup of coffee beside an empty chair. He looked like a husband preparing for a difficult conversation, not a man who had kissed his mistress beside the family photographs.

“You came back,” he said.

“I said I would.”

His relief was immediate and irritating. He crossed the room, touched her elbow, and leaned down to kiss her cheek.

Claire allowed it.

“Long day?” she asked.

Ethan blinked. “What?”

“Yesterday. You said it was a long day.”

He recovered quickly. “Brutal.”

“I’m sure.”

She hung up her coat and placed the folder inside the hall cabinet, behind a stack of old tax records. The folder contained nothing dangerous yet. Only printed bank statements, a list of questions, and a phone number Noah had found for Lucas Hale.

Lucas had been Claire’s friend before he became a business lawyer. They had worked together during a summer internship, long before Ethan’s company existed. He had always listened when other people were waiting to speak.

Claire waited until Ethan left for the office before she opened the joint account online.

The first transfer to VG Consulting appeared eight months earlier: $12,500. Then $18,000. Then $25,000. Some were labeled legal services. Others carried descriptions so vague they might as well have said nothing.

She added them with a calculator.

Four hundred nineteen thousand, six hundred dollars.

Claire stared at the number until it stopped looking real.

She had helped Ethan build Cole Properties from a folding table in their first apartment. She had written the investor letters, designed the early presentations, and handled the marketing while he negotiated deals. When the company grew, he had called her his secret weapon.

Then he had asked her to leave her job so she could help him full-time.

“Just until we stabilize,” he had said.

Two years later, she had no salary, no formal title, and no idea that nearly half a million dollars had been sent to a consulting company connected to Vanessa.

Claire called Lucas from the laundry room.

“I need you to tell me what not to do,” she said.

“That’s an unusual way to ask for help.”

“I saw Ethan with Vanessa.”

Lucas was silent for a moment. “Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I heard him say that once everything was transferred, I wouldn’t matter anymore.”

Lucas’s voice changed. “Don’t confront him yet.”

“I already came home.”

“Then act normal. Do not accuse him. Do not tell him what you found. Start saving every document.”

“I found payments to VG Consulting.”

“How much?”

“Nearly four hundred twenty thousand dollars.”

He exhaled. “That may be more dangerous than the affair.”

“I thought you’d say that.”

“Who owns VG Consulting?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find out. Also pull every loan document you can access.”

Claire opened the company portal on her laptop. Ethan had once given her administrative access because she handled insurance and property records. She searched by address first.

The house appeared under a collateral schedule attached to a loan for $2.4 million.

Claire’s throat tightened.

“Lucas,” she whispered. “There’s a loan against the house.”

“Did you sign it?”

“I don’t remember seeing it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“No.”

“Download it.”

The document opened slowly. At the bottom of the final page was a digital signature bearing her name.

Claire leaned closer. The signature looked like hers from a distance. The curve of the C was right. The final stroke rose at the same angle. But she had never signed the document.

“Lucas,” she said. “My name is on it.”

“Can you prove you didn’t sign?”

“I was at Noah’s hospital that afternoon. His wife had surgery.”

“Find the records. We need a timeline.”

Claire saved the document to a new account Lucas helped her create. She took photographs of the screen with her personal phone and sent them to Noah for safekeeping.

That evening, Ethan came home carrying flowers.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “About yesterday.”

Claire accepted the bouquet. “Thank you.”

“Vanessa and I were discussing a legal matter.”

“She was kissing you over a legal matter?”

The mask slipped. “You’re going to make this ugly?”

“I’m asking a question.”

He looked away first.

Claire placed the flowers in water. “Dinner will be ready in an hour.”

She had no intention of cooking. She only needed him to believe that the familiar routines still existed.

That night, while Ethan slept beside her, Claire opened the joint account again. The transfer list ended with a payment made that morning.

$50,000 to VG Consulting.

Under the transaction was a note from the sender: Final phase.

Claire saved the screen.

Then she opened the loan document and stared at the signature carrying her name.
