Chapter 7 - THE FINAL TRIAL

Six months later, life at the Montgomery Estate was filled with joy and laughter. Samuel Montgomery's health had improved dramatically, revitalized by the presence of his granddaughter and great-granddaughter.
However, the final remnants of Maya's past made one last desperate attempt to claw their way back.
While Richard was serving his prison term, his mother Olivia, consumed by bitterness and poverty, attempted to file a petition in family court for visitation rights regarding Lily. She hired a disgraced, publicity-hungry attorney who claimed that Maya was "alienating" Lily from her father's side of the family and using her billionaire wealth to oppress a poor old grandmother.
The media caught wind of the story, and a small legal battle erupted in Manhattan Family Court.
On the day of the hearing, Olivia appeared outside the courthouse dressed in faded, ragged clothes, weeping hysterically in front of news cameras, claiming she was a victim of the "cruel billionaire heiress."
When Maya arrived at the courthouse, accompanied by Julian and her legal team, she was met with a wall of reporters and flashing cameras.
Instead of hiding or dodging questions, Maya paused at the top of the courthouse steps, looking directly into the cameras.
"Mrs. Vance claims she wants to be a loving grandmother," Maya spoke calmly to the press. "Where was her love when she laughed while her son shoved my face into my daughter's birthday cake? Where was her love when she called my child 'a mistake' because I was poor? Justice is not oppression, gentlemen. It is accountability."
Inside the courtroom, the judge reviewed the evidence submitted by Maya's legal team.
It was not just the viral cake video. Julian's intelligence team had compiled five years of bank records, text messages, and audio recordings showing how Olivia and Richard had systematically abused, degraded, and financially controlled Maya during her marriage.
The judge slammed his gavel down hard.
"Mrs. Vance," the judge said, glaring sternly at Olivia. "Your petition is not only denied, but it is also deemed frivolous and malicious. The court finds that exposure to you or your son poses a direct emotional and psychological hazard to the child. A permanent restraining order is issued. You are barred from coming within 1,000 yards of Lily Montgomery or her mother for the rest of your natural life."
Olivia broke down into genuine, panicked tears. "No! Maya, please! I'm broke! I have nothing left!"
Maya stood up, looking down at Olivia without hatred, but without pity either.

"You had a family, Olivia," Maya said quietly. "You traded it for cruelty and pride. Now you must live with your choice."
As Maya walked out of the courtroom hand in hand with Julian, the last dark shadow of her past was permanently dispelled.
