Chapter 5 - THE FALL OF THE VANCES

When the security guards shoved Richard out through the polished glass doors into the main lobby, his mother Olivia and Vanessa were waiting by the coffee bar, holding expensive designer bags they expected Richard to pay for later that day.

"Richard!" Olivia squealed, rushing over. "How did it go? Did they make you Vice President?"

"Get out," Richard stammered, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling violently. "We have to get out of here right now!"

Before they could reach the exit, four police officers walked into the lobby, accompanied by Thomas, Julian Sterling's chief assistant.

"Richard Vance?" the lead officer announced firmly.

"Yes?" Richard squeaked.

"You are under arrest for domestic assault, harassment, and corporate embezzlement pending full investigation," the officer declared, pulling out handcuffs.

Olivia gasped, dropping her purse. "What?! Assault? On who?! That worthless waitress?!"

Thomas stepped forward, looking down at Olivia with utter disgust. "Mrs. Vance, the woman you refer to as a 'worthless waitress' is Maya Montgomery, owner of the building you are currently standing in. And as for you..." Thomas handed Olivia a legal notice. "This is an eviction notice for the suburban home you reside in. The property was leased through a subsidiary of Vance Logistics. Since Richard is no longer employed, your lease is terminated effective at noon today."

"No! You can't evict me!" Olivia shrieked, her voice echoing through the lobby as bystanders turned to watch. "That's my home!"

Vanessa panicked, immediately taking three steps away from Richard. "Wait, officer! I have nothing to do with this! I'm just a family friend!"

Thomas turned his cool gaze to Vanessa. "Ms. Vanessa Drake? You posted an illegal recording of an assault online with malicious intent to defamation. Ms. Montgomery's legal team has filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against you personally. All your personal bank accounts have been frozen under a temporary court injunction."

Vanessa's face went completely white. "Ten... ten million dollars?! I don't have ten million dollars! I'm an influencer!"

"Then I suggest you retain a very good public defender," Thomas replied coldly.

As the police slapped handcuffs on Richard's wrists and led him away in full view of dozens of cameras and onlookers, Olivia fell to her knees, sobbing hysterical tears onto the marble floor. Vanessa ran out of the building, covering her face as reporters—alerted by Sterling Capital's PR firm—began snapping photos of the drama.

That night, news of the "Montgomery Heiress Revenge" blew up the internet.

The viral video of the cake incident was re-uploaded, but this time with full context: the arrogant husband and his mistress humiliating a hidden billionaire heiress, followed by their instant ruin forty-eight hours later. Public sympathy turned entirely to Maya. The Vance family became the nation's biggest laughingstock.

In her luxurious suite at the Plaza, Maya watched the news report on a large television screen.

Lily was asleep in the adjacent bedroom, tucked into soft silk sheets with a gigantic teddy bear Julian had bought for her.

Julian walked over, placing a glass of sparkling water on the table beside Maya. "You did well today, Maya."

Maya looked up at Julian. "It feels surreal. For five years, I thought I was powerless. I thought if I spoke up, Richard would take Lily away from me."

"You were never powerless," Julian said softly, sitting down opposite her. "You held your dignity even when they threw dirt at you. Wealth only revealed what was already inside you."

Maya smiled, a genuine warmth lighting up her eyes. "Thank you, Julian. Without you and Thomas finding me, I don't know where I'd be."

"I didn't find you by accident, Maya," Julian confessed, his eyes searching hers. "When I saw you standing in that yard, protecting your daughter with frosting on your face... I didn't see a victim. I saw the strongest woman I had ever encountered."

A gentle blush crossed Maya's cheeks as she looked into Julian's deep, sincere eyes. For the first time in years, she felt safe.
