Chapter 6 - The Ledger with Missing Pages

Ethan pulled Claire into the narrow space behind the cabinet as the basement door opened. Mara and Alice slipped behind a row of shelves. The red light continued blinking beneath the papers, silent but insistent.

Vivian entered first. Grant followed with a flashlight, and Daniel came last. He looked directly toward the cabinet before pretending to search the room.

“She’s here,” Daniel said.

“You knew?” Vivian asked.

“I suspected.”

Claire held her breath. The space smelled of dust and old paper. The baby shifted sharply, and she pressed a hand over her mouth to keep from making a sound.

Grant moved to the table.

“Find the original trust.”

Daniel opened drawers.

“It isn’t here.”

“Then search better.”

Vivian stepped toward the cabinet. Her hand reached for the handle, but the red light flashed faster. Mara emerged from the shelves and struck the flashlight from Grant’s hand.

Ethan moved at the same instant, forcing Daniel against the wall. Alice shouted as the room erupted in motion. Claire stumbled into the open corridor.

Vivian grabbed her hair.

“You ungrateful little thief,”

Vivian hissed. Claire twisted free.

“You planned my marriage.”

Vivian slapped her. The sound echoed through the basement. Ethan shoved between them.

“Touch her again and you’ll regret it.”

Daniel lunged, but Mara caught his wrist and pinned him against the table. Grant raised both hands, suddenly the picture of an old man caught in a misunderstanding.

“We came to retrieve family property,” he said.

“You came armed,” Ethan replied.

Grant’s eyes flicked toward the gun at Mara’s hip.

“She is the one carrying a weapon.”

Above them, an alarm began to ring. The old courthouse security system had finally noticed the broken door. In the confusion, Vivian pulled a small device from her pocket and pressed a button.

The red light beneath the cabinet went dark. Claire realized the light was not an alarm. It was a transfer signal.

The hidden device began sending data. Mara saw it too.

“Whatever is in there, it’s uploading.”

Daniel drove his shoulder into the table. The ledger fell to the floor, its pages scattering. Claire saw the missing section—pages 47 through 53 had been cut out with a blade.

One loose page slid beneath her shoe. The top line read: C. MERCER—PAYMENT AUTHORIZED.

Below it, in Nolan’s handwriting, were three words:NOT HER SIGNATURE. Vivian saw the page and screamed. Daniel knocked Mara aside and reached for Claire.

Ethan tackled him before his fingers touched her. Grant grabbed Vivian, pulling her toward the stairs.

“Let them go,” Claire said.

“The upload is more important.”

Ethan looked at the blinking device.

“Mara?”

“Thirty seconds.”

Daniel laughed from the floor.

“You think a few recordings will save you?” “No,” Claire replied.

“The truth will.”

The upload completed. Mara pulled the device from its hiding place. It was connected to an old external drive labeled BLUEBIRD—SECOND WING.

“Second wing?” Ethan asked.

Alice stared at the drive.

“Your father built a second archive.”

“Where?”

Alice looked at Claire.

“In the maternity hospital.”

The alarm above them grew louder. Police sirens approached from the street, summoned by courthouse security. Ethan released Daniel only when the officers entered the basement.

Daniel immediately began speaking. He claimed Claire had broken into the courthouse, attacked Vivian, and threatened the family. Vivian showed the officer the red mark on her cheek, carefully avoiding mention of the slap she had given Claire.

Claire stood silently while Mara handed over the page and the drive. The officer examined both, then looked at Claire’s swollen wrist.

“Are you safe going home?” “I don’t have a home,” Claire said.

The officer’s expression changed, but only briefly. Grant stepped forward with a practiced sigh.

“She’s been confused since the heat incident,” he said.

“We’ve tried to get her help.”

At Sentinel Ridge, the drive revealed a file tree recorded by Nolan. He had hidden copies of every document with a trusted obstetrician named Dr. Lena Ortiz, who had treated Claire’s mother and later became Claire’s doctor.

“Why would my doctor have my father’s files?” Claire asked.

Alice answered softly.

“Because he knew Grant would search your house.”

Mara opened the first video. Nolan appeared on screen, older than Claire remembered, sitting in a plain office.

“If Claire ever becomes involved with Daniel Vale, she must know that Daniel did not choose her by accident.”

Claire’s stomach tightened. Nolan continued.

“He was present the night I confronted Grant at Coyote Wash. He heard the threats. He knows what his father is capable of, and he chose the family business anyway.”

The video skipped. Daniel appeared in the frame beside Grant, younger and furious.

“If you tell Claire, I will make sure she loses everything.”

Nolan looked toward the camera.

“This is the first time Daniel has threatened me directly.”

The screen went black.

Claire whispered, “He knew.”

Ethan placed a hand on the table.

“We’ll make sure everyone knows.”

Mara opened the final file. It contained a recent audio recording, timestamped two nights before Claire’s collapse.

Daniel’s voice said, “Friday is the deadline. If she gives birth before the transfer, the trust locks the land away. If she gives birth after the signature, the child inherits a debt instead.”

Vivian asked, “And if she refuses?”

Daniel answered, “Then we make the pregnancy look dangerous enough that no one lets her make decisions.”

The recording ended with Grant saying one sentence.

“Move the birth forward.”
