Chapter 10 - The False Transfer

Glass exploded across the trailer. Mara shoved Claire beneath the table while Ethan pulled Otto away from the window. A second impact struck the wall, followed by the sharp crack of a firearm outside.

Daniel dropped behind his truck.

“I told you I’m not here to hurt anyone!” he shouted.

“Then stop bringing people with guns!”

Ethan yelled. Mara crawled toward the back door.

“The shooter is on the north side.”

Claire gripped the table leg. Her breathing had gone shallow, and the baby was moving rapidly. She tried to remember the rhythm Dr. Ortiz had taught her for staying calm, but fear kept breaking through.

Otto pointed toward the floor.

“Storm cellar.”

They escaped through a hatch beneath the kitchen rug. The cellar opened into a drainage ditch behind the trailer. Mara led them through weeds and darkness while Ethan carried Otto’s locked box.

At the edge of the property, a Sentinel Ridge vehicle waited. Daniel emerged from the trees behind them, his shirt torn and his face streaked with blood.

“Wait,” he said.

Claire turned. Daniel stopped several feet away.

“The people shooting at you are Grant’s contractors. They were supposed to scare you, not kill you.”

“You hired them?”

“No.”

“You knew about them.”

He looked toward the burning trailer.

“My father doesn’t tell me everything.”

“But you do what he asks.”

Daniel had no answer. They left him behind. At Sentinel Ridge, Dr. Ortiz examined Claire and confirmed that the baby was stable.

Claire wanted to stay awake all night, but exhaustion dragged her under. She woke to the sound of an argument in the hall. Mara was speaking to a bank investigator.

“The transfer has already been accepted,” the investigator said.

“The account shows Claire authorized it.”

Claire stepped into the hallway.

“What transfer?”

The investigator turned pale.

“You are Claire Mercer?”

“Yes.”

He handed her a printed notice. Coyote Wash had been transferred to Vale North Development three hours earlier. The signature had been electronically verified through a password linked to Claire’s old email.

“I never approved anything.”

“The record says you did.”

Mara took the notice.

“Can it be reversed?”

“Not without a formal dispute.”

The investigator left. Ethan slammed his fist against the wall. Claire stared at the page.

“They don’t need me to sign anymore.” “They still need the trust documents,” Mara said.

“Unless they destroy them.”

Nora Bell arrived with a camera crew and a small recorder. Claire told her the story from the beginning, stopping whenever her voice failed. Nora did not interrupt.

When Claire finished, Nora asked one question.

“What do you want?”

Claire looked at the photograph of her father.

“I want the truth to survive me.”

Nora began assembling a report that could be released if anything happened to Claire. They secured copies of the files with several journalists and an independent archivist. The evidence no longer existed in one place.

Then Otto called from a motel where Ethan had hidden him.

“The county clerk is gone,” he said.

“The new transfer was filed with my old stamp.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“Someone inside the county office is helping them.”

The next morning, Daniel requested a meeting. He came alone to the Sentinel Ridge lobby, carrying a folder. Ethan wanted him removed, but Claire agreed to hear him.

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

“This is proof that Grant and Vivian used my name without my knowledge.”

Claire opened it. The pages showed payments from Safe Harbor Families to mechanics, inspectors, hospital staff, and a private investigator. Daniel’s name appeared beside each transaction.

“You expect me to believe you were unaware?”

“I knew some of it. Not all.”

“You knew enough to keep me trapped.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I was trying to protect you from my father.”

“By locking me outside?”

“I was trying to force you to sign before he did something worse.”

“You were the something worse.”

For the first time, Daniel looked ashamed. It did not move Claire. He slid one final page across the table.

It was a handwritten note from Vivian. If Daniel fails, use the hospital route. The child must be delivered before Friday’s vote.

Claire looked up.

“What is the hospital route?” Daniel’s silence answered before his words did.

“They arranged a transfer,” he said.

“A private ambulance. They plan to take you somewhere tonight.”

The lobby doors opened behind him. Two paramedics entered, pushing an empty stretcher. One of them called Claire by name.
