Chapter 11 - The Night Ambulance

Mara moved between Claire and the paramedics before they reached the reception desk.
“State your purpose.”
The taller paramedic held up a clipboard.
“We have an order for Claire Mercer. Her doctor requested observation.”
Dr. Ortiz had not requested anything. Claire could tell from the man’s face that he knew she knew.
“Leave,” Ethan said.
The second paramedic reached inside his jacket. Mara drew her weapon first. The lobby froze.
Security sealed the doors while the two men were searched. They carried no firearms, but each had a plastic badge printed with a hospital logo. One badge belonged to a real employee who had reported it stolen two months earlier.
Daniel stood near the table, pale and sweating.
“You brought them here,” Ethan said.
“I warned you.”
“You led them here.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“I wanted you to see the danger.”
Claire believed he had done both. That was the horror of Daniel: he could warn her about a fire while holding the match. The false paramedics were taken away by local officers.
One refused to speak. The other kept repeating that he had been paid to transport Claire to a private clinic outside Red Hollow.
“What clinic?” Mara asked.
He gave a name that did not exist. That night, the team moved Claire to a fortified guesthouse owned by Sentinel Ridge. Nora stayed with her, recording every conversation.
Ethan placed guards at the entrance, and Dr. Ortiz agreed to sleep in the adjoining room. Claire sat on the bed with the pale blue blanket across her knees.
“I hate that everyone is afraid of my pregnancy,” she said.
Nora set down the recorder.
“Everyone is afraid of what the baby represents to them. That isn’t the same as being afraid of the baby.”
“To Daniel, the baby is a key.”
“To you?”
Claire looked down.
“A reason to stop running.”
Near midnight, a message arrived through the secure system. It came from an account linked to Daniel. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL TRUST.
A photograph followed. It showed the first page of Nolan’s document and a handwritten code. Claire knew the code.
Her father had used it in childhood letters, a phrase from a book they read together: The river remembers.
“He’s asking for a meeting,” she said.
Ethan entered the room.
“No.”
“He has the original.”
“It could be fake.”
“Then he wants us to think he has it.”
Mara studied the photograph.
“The paper is real. The corner has the courthouse seal.”
Daniel requested the meeting at an unfinished glass house outside town. The property belonged to Bracken Meridian. Silas Venn had bought it but never completed construction.
Its transparent walls reflected the desert moon, making the building look like a lantern with no place to hide. Claire went with Ethan, Mara, and two agents. Daniel waited inside beside a concrete fireplace.
He held the trust document in a clear folder.
“You look tired,” he said.
“You look guilty.”
He accepted that without protest.
“I can give you the document,” Daniel said.
“But you have to leave the country tonight.”
Claire laughed once.
“You want me to abandon my land, my family, and my life?”
“I want you alive.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked toward the glass wall.
“Because I didn’t know how to leave.”
He explained that Grant had controlled his accounts, threatened to expose crimes Daniel had helped cover, and promised to destroy Claire if Daniel disobeyed. Vivian had taught him that cruelty was a form of loyalty.
“You had choices,” Claire said.
“I know.”
“You chose them every day.”
Daniel placed the folder on the fireplace.
“I’m choosing differently now.”
A light flashed outside. Ethan pushed Claire down as the glass wall shattered. Bullets struck the concrete fireplace.
Daniel threw himself over the document, while Mara returned fire toward the desert. One of the Sentinel Ridge agents fell.
“Back exit!” Ethan shouted.
Claire crawled behind a steel column. Daniel grabbed the clear folder and followed them through the unfinished house. At the rear entrance, he shoved the document into Claire’s hands.
“Go!”
“Come with us.”
He looked at her as if she had offered him a life he no longer deserved.
“They’ll follow me.”
Daniel turned back toward the glass house. Claire and Ethan escaped through the drainage channel. Behind them, an explosion lit the desert.

The unfinished house burned with a colorless, violent light. At the guesthouse, Claire opened the folder. The trust document was inside.
So was a second page, written in Nolan’s handwriting. If Daniel ever gives this to Claire, do not trust the surrender. Ask him about the child he believes was born before her.
