Chapter 13 - The House of Evidence

Silas Venn stepped from the shadows holding the memory card between two fingers. He wore a pale suit untouched by dust, as though the desert had agreed not to stain him. Behind him stood Grant and Vivian, flanked by two men in dark jackets.

Daniel moved toward Claire, but Grant raised a gun.

“Stay where you are,” Grant said.

Ethan placed himself between Claire and the weapon.

“You’re surrounded.”

Silas smiled.

“By whom? A private security company with no authority, a disgraced bookkeeper, and a pregnant woman who has already been called unstable by half the county?”

Mara’s voice came through Claire’s hidden earpiece.

“Keep him talking.”

Claire understood. The station had been wired before they arrived. Every word was being transmitted to Nora and three independent newsrooms.

The plan had been Ethan’s, but Claire had insisted on the location. She wanted the Vales to believe they still controlled the room.

“You killed my father,” Claire said.

Silas glanced at Grant.

“Your father died in an accident.”

“You paid for the accident.”

“Grant arranged it.”

The admission landed like a dropped glass. Grant’s face twisted.

“You promised this would disappear.”

“It would have, if your son had not married the girl.”

Daniel flinched. Vivian stepped forward.

“Claire, listen to me. Silas is trying to divide us.”

“You forged my signature.”

“We protected the family.”

“You accessed my medical records.”

“We protected the child.”

“You planned to take my baby.”

Vivian’s composure cracked.

“You cannot raise a child in the middle of this.” “You created the middle.” Mara’s voice whispered, “Transmission confirmed.

Keep going.” Silas slipped the memory card into a small reader. A screen mounted on the station wall flickered to life. It showed Nolan Mercer beside the burned truck, filmed from a hidden camera.

Nolan was alive in the recording, but frightened.

“Grant, this is not a warning anymore. I have copies of the contamination report.”

Grant stood opposite him. Daniel was behind Grant, holding the red metal can seen in the photograph.

“Give us the files,” Grant said.

“No.”

Silas appeared at the edge of the frame, younger but unmistakable.

“Then your daughter inherits a problem she cannot solve.”

Nolan looked toward Daniel.

“You brought him?” Daniel said nothing.

Grant poured fuel over the truck. The video ended before the crash, but the audio continued. Nolan shouted.

Metal struck metal.

Daniel’s voice cried, “Stop!” Then Grant said, “If you want Claire alive, drive.” The screen went black.

Daniel fell to his knees. Claire watched him with a grief too large for anger.

“You were there.”

“I didn’t know he would kill him.”

“You helped.”

“I was sixteen.”

“You were old enough to remember.”

Grant raised his gun toward Daniel.

“You have always been weak.”

Ethan moved, but Silas pressed a remote. The station doors locked, and gas began leaking from the vents. Mara shouted for everyone to cover their faces.

Vivian stumbled toward the exit.

“Silas, what are you doing?”

“Removing witnesses.”

Grant fired at the ceiling. The gunshot shattered a light, and darkness swallowed the station. Claire felt Ethan pull her behind a concrete pillar.

The gas burned her eyes. She heard Mara fighting one of the guards. Alice screamed.

Daniel coughed nearby. Claire’s hand found a metal emergency lever on the wall. She pulled it.

The station’s old ventilation fans roared to life, drawing the gas upward. Fresh air rushed through broken windows.

“Move!” Ethan shouted.

Claire crawled toward Alice, who had fallen near the tracks. Vivian reached her first, not to help but to snatch the memory card reader. Claire grabbed Vivian’s wrist.

“You’re not taking anything else.”

Vivian stared at her with a hatred stripped of manners.

“You think this ends with them in prison? Silas owns the judge. Grant owns the county. Daniel owns your name.”

“Not anymore.”

Claire pressed the emergency beacon beneath her sleeve. Every screen in the station lit with the live transmission. Nora had added a title card:THE VALE FILES—LIVE.

Silas looked up at the screens. For the first time, he seemed genuinely afraid. Outside, sirens approached from multiple directions.

Mara had called the state investigators before the meeting. The local police were not the only audience now. Grant fired again.

The bullet struck the memory card reader in Vivian’s hand. Plastic flew. Vivian screamed.

Daniel tackled his father. They crashed against the platform edge. Grant’s gun skidded beneath a bench.

Silas ran toward the rear exit, but Alice stepped into his path.

“Where is my daughter?”

she demanded. Silas stopped. Alice’s voice rose above the alarms.

“Where is Rosa?”

Silas smiled bitterly.

“You should ask Grant.”

Grant and Daniel froze.

Vivian whispered, “Rosa died years ago.”

Silas looked at her.

“No. Rosa is alive.”

May you like

He pointed toward Claire.

“She has been working inside Sentinel Ridge under the name Mara Quill.”
