Chapter 5 - The Illness

Claire died after a sudden autoimmune crisis.
That was the official explanation.
Three years earlier, she developed fever.
Organ inflammation.
Rapid decline.
Doctors called it rare.
Unpredictable.
Arthur had accepted it because grief does not ask forensic questions.
Now he asked.
Her medical records showed something strange.
The first hospital toxicology screen had a note.
UNIDENTIFIED COMPOUND — REPEAT RECOMMENDED.
The repeat test was never done.
Why?
The consulting physician canceled it.
Name:
Dr. Evan Price.
Arthur knew him.
Marcus Hale’s brother-in-law.
Daniel went still.
“That’s not proof of poisoning.”
“I know.”
Arthur forced himself to stay precise.
“But it is reason to review.”
They requested archived samples.
Some existed.
Enough.
Toxicology specialists found traces of a compound capable of triggering severe immune response in susceptible patients.
Not automatically lethal.
Not proof of deliberate poisoning.
But not explained by her medication list.
Then investigators found a pharmacy purchase.
Dr. Price obtained the compound for “research.”
One week before Claire became ill.
Arthur closed his eyes.
Then Marcus Hale finally called.
From Mexico.
“Arthur.”
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“From who?”
“Victoria.”
Arthur almost laughed.
“Interesting.”
Marcus sounded terrified.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Marcus had known Victoria since Stanford.
They had dated briefly.
Later, she became obsessed with Claire’s family company.
Not because of jealousy.
Because Claire’s late father had once promised Victoria a role in a private investment fund, then cut her out after discovering she had leaked information.
Victoria blamed Claire.
Marcus helped her access records.
At first, small things.
Valuations.
Cap tables.
Then Claire caught them.
Cut Marcus off.
Threatened to tell Arthur.
“What happened after that?” Arthur asked.
Silence.
“Marcus.”
“She got sick.”
Arthur’s throat tightened.
“Did Victoria make her sick?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not enough.”
“I swear.”
Marcus started crying.
“I knew Dr. Price helped Victoria get something.”
“What?”
“He said it would make Claire too sick to travel.”
Arthur felt cold.
“Why stop her from traveling?”
“Claire was going to meet federal investigators.”
There it was.
About what?
Trust fraud.
Insider transactions.
And Marcus.
Arthur stared at the wall.
Claire had been trying to expose them.
Then she died.
Marcus continued.
“I didn’t know it would kill her.”
Arthur’s voice flattened.
“But you knew they drugged her.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
Arthur ended the call.
Police got the number.
Interpol became involved.
Then Daniel showed another restored message.
Victoria to Marcus.
Three days before Claire’s illness:
IF SHE MISSES THE MEETING, WE BUY TIME.
No murder confession.
No direct intent to kill.
But enough to reopen everything.
Then Arthur’s phone buzzed.
Hospital security.
Victoria was downstairs.
May you like
Demanding to see Lily.
And she had brought a court order.
