Chapter 3 - Claire’s Trust

Claire had created Lily’s trust before she died.

Arthur knew that.

He did not know the details.

He had been too broken to read them closely.

His attorney, Daniel Mercer, arrived at the hospital by dawn.

Arthur handed him the photograph.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Where did she get this binder?”

“My study.”

“It was locked.”

“Apparently not.”

Daniel opened a secure copy of Claire’s trust.

The structure was simple.

Lily inherited forty percent of Claire’s family investment company at age twenty-five.

Until then, voting rights were held by two trustees.

Arthur.

And Claire’s sister, Madeline Shaw.

Arthur frowned.

“Madeline resigned.”

“She did.”

“When?”

“Four months ago.”

Arthur stared.

“Why?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She said Victoria made communication impossible.”

Arthur felt something drop inside him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I assumed you knew.”

“No.”

Another assumption.

Victoria had told Arthur Madeline wanted distance.

Said grief made her hostile.

Said she resented the marriage.

Arthur believed it.

Daniel continued.

When Madeline resigned, the trust required a successor.

Normally, the court would approve an independent fiduciary.

But someone filed a petition naming Victoria.

Arthur stopped breathing.

“What?”

“Your signature is on it.”

“I never signed.”

Daniel turned the tablet.

There it was.

Arthur Bennett.

Perfect.

Fake.

The filing had not yet been approved.

A clerk flagged a notarization problem.

But Victoria had tried.

If approved, she would co-control Lily’s future voting rights.

Forty percent.

Not pocket money.

Power.

Claire’s company owned stakes in media, real estate, and private credit.

Enough to matter.

Enough to tempt.

Arthur asked:

“Did Victoria know how much it was worth?”

Daniel looked at him.

“She requested a valuation.”

Of course.

Then Lily woke.

“Daddy?”

Arthur moved instantly.

“I’m here.”

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Rosa.

Then whispered:

“Mommy’s letter.”

Arthur froze.

“What letter?”

“In my rabbit.”

Rosa looked confused.

“The rabbit?”

Lily nodded.

“Victoria took it.”

Arthur remembered the clip.

Victoria taking the stuffed rabbit.

“Where is it now?”

Lily started crying.

“She burned it.”

Arthur felt rage rise.

He buried it.

“Did you see the letter?”

“Some.”

“What did it say?”

Lily closed her eyes.

“Mommy said if Daddy gets married…”

Her voice faded.

Arthur leaned closer.

“What?”

“If Daddy gets married, don’t let her change the papers.”

Daniel and Arthur stared at each other.

Claire had anticipated something.

Why?

Then Lily whispered:

“Mommy knew Victoria.”

Arthur’s breath stopped.

“No, sweetheart. Mommy died before I met Victoria.”

Lily shook her head.

“She was in the picture.”

“What picture?”

“The one in Mommy’s box.”

Arthur had never seen it.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Arthur.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed Claire’s old cloud archive last night.”

“Who?”

“Victoria’s laptop.”

Arthur looked at Lily.

Then at Daniel.

May you like

Claire and Victoria had known each other.

And somebody had spent the night deleting proof.
