Chapter 1 - The Scream by the Pool

Arthur Bennett heard the scream before he saw the water move.

“Daddy!”

The word tore through the glass-walled living room.

Arthur dropped the wineglass in his hand.

It shattered across the marble island.

He ran.

Outside, the Hollywood Hills night was perfect.

Too perfect.

Los Angeles glittered below the infinity pool like a field of diamonds.

And in the middle of that beautiful view, his four-year-old daughter was disappearing beneath the water.

“Lily!”

Arthur dove fully dressed.

His shoulder slammed against the pool edge.

He barely felt it.

Lily’s pink dress floated around her like a broken flower.

Her small hands moved once.

Then stopped.

Arthur reached her and pulled her against his chest.

“Lily, look at me.”

No response.

He dragged her to the shallow ledge.

“Call 911!”

No one moved.

The patio was full of guests.

Board members.

Investors.

Friends.

People who had been laughing thirty seconds earlier.

Then Victoria appeared at the sliding doors.

His new wife.

Silk gown.

Diamond earrings.

Perfect hair.

And no shoes.

Arthur did not notice the shoes at first.

He noticed Lily’s lips.

Blue.

He tilted her head.

“Come on, sweetheart.”

Water spilled from Lily’s mouth.

She coughed.

Once.

Then again.

Arthur nearly collapsed.

“Daddy…”

“I’m here.”

She gripped his shirt.

“I’m here.”

Paramedics were already being called.

Someone wrapped a towel around her.

Arthur held her so tightly the medic had to tell him to loosen his arms.

Then Lily whispered something.

So softly he almost missed it.

“She pushed me.”

Arthur froze.

“What?”

Lily’s eyes moved past him.

Toward Victoria.

Victoria stopped.

For one second, the woman who never lost control looked terrified.

Then she smiled.

Not warmly.

Carefully.

“Arthur, she’s confused.”

Lily began shaking.

“No.”

Arthur stood with his daughter in his arms.

“What happened?”

Victoria stepped closer.

“She was running near the pool.”

“Lily says you pushed her.”

“She’s four.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“She slipped.”

A maid named Rosa moved near the door.

Then stopped.

Arthur saw her.

“Rosa?”

Victoria turned sharply.

The maid lowered her eyes.

Arthur’s instincts changed.

Boardrooms had taught him one thing well.

Silence is rarely empty.

“What did you see?”

Rosa looked at Victoria.

Then at Lily.

“I…”

Victoria said:

“Rosa was inside.”

Arthur looked at her.

“I asked Rosa.”

The maid swallowed.

“I saw Mrs. Bennett near the pool.”

Victoria’s face went still.

“Doing what?”

Rosa whispered:

“Talking to Lily.”

Victoria laughed once.

“That proves nothing.”

Arthur looked down at his daughter.

Lily was gripping a small silver locket.

Her mother’s locket.

The one Claire had given her before she died.

Except the chain was broken.

Arthur stared at it.

“Sweetheart, where did this break?”

Lily looked at Victoria.

“She tried to take it.”

Victoria’s breath caught.

Arthur’s voice dropped.

“Why?”

Lily began crying.

“Because Mommy left something inside.”

Every head on the patio turned.

Arthur had never known anything was inside the locket.

He touched the tiny latch.

Victoria stepped forward too fast.

“Arthur, don’t.”

That one word changed everything.

He looked at her.

“Why not?”

She had no answer.

Arthur opened the locket.

A folded strip of paper was hidden behind Claire’s photograph.

He pulled it free.

Three words were written in Claire’s handwriting.

CHECK THE POOL CAMERA.

Arthur looked up.

Victoria had gone completely white.
