Chapter 4 - Before Arthur

Claire Bennett and Victoria Lang had attended the same graduate program at Stanford.
Arthur learned that by noon.
Same year.
Same finance concentration.
Same alumni photograph.
They were standing three people apart.
Victoria had never mentioned it.
Not once.
Arthur stared at the image.
“Why hide this?”
Daniel answered:
“Because she wanted you to believe she entered your life after Claire.”
The archive recovery team restored deleted emails.
Claire to Madeline:
Victoria is asking questions about Dad’s voting trust again.
Another:
I don’t trust her around the family documents.
Another:
She thinks marriage is a financial structure before it’s anything else.
Arthur felt sick.
Then one email changed the entire timeline.
Claire to Victoria.
Subject:
STOP CONTACTING ME.
Victoria,
I will not help you access the Shaw family trust.
Do not come to my house again.
Arthur read it three times.
“Come to my house?”
Daniel said:
“They knew each other well.”
Claire had never told him.
Why?
Maybe she thought it was over.
Maybe she was protecting him from old drama.
Maybe she never imagined Victoria would appear years later.
Then they restored one photo.
Claire.
Victoria.
And a man named Marcus Hale.
Arthur knew Marcus.
His former CFO.
The man who introduced Victoria to Arthur at a charity gala.
Marcus had told him they met through philanthropy.
Lie.
Arthur called him.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Daniel said:
“His phone is off.”
Arthur’s instincts sharpened.
“Where is he?”
“Last known address in Malibu.”
Arthur did not go personally.
Police did.
Marcus’s house was empty.
Laptop gone.
Passport missing.
Then a neighbor gave security footage.
Marcus left at 3:14 a.m.
Twenty minutes after Victoria’s laptop accessed Claire’s archive.
Coincidence died.
Arthur looked at Daniel.
“They coordinated.”
“Likely.”
Then Rosa brought Lily’s burnt rabbit.
At least what remained.
Victoria had thrown it into an outdoor firepit two nights earlier.
Rosa rescued it after the fire went out.
The fur was blackened.
One side melted.
But inside the stuffing was a small metal tube.
Arthur opened it.
A micro SD card.
Claire had hidden data inside Lily’s toy.
Daniel stared.
“Your wife was prepared.”
Arthur almost cried.
Claire had known she might not always be there.
The card contained trust documents.
Emails.
Photos.
Then one video.
Claire sat in Arthur’s old study.
She looked tired.
Alive.
“Arthur, if you’re watching this, something happened that I hoped never would.”
Arthur stopped breathing.
Claire continued.
“Victoria Lang is dangerous around money.”
Then:
“And Marcus Hale is helping her.”
Arthur gripped the desk.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“If I die unexpectedly, do not let either of them near Lily’s trust.”
The video ended.
Arthur sat in silence.

Then Daniel said the sentence Arthur did not want to hear.
“Claire died unexpectedly.”
