Chapter 7 - The Woman in the Photograph

Oliver wanted to go alone. Elena refused. Chloe drove while two unmarked cars followed at a distance, and Grace's note lay folded in Oliver's fist.

“If you are bait,” Elena said, “you do not get to choose the trap.”

“You keep saying things like that as if I asked to be involved.”

“You were involved the moment they threatened your mother.”

The note led them to an abandoned ferry terminal on the edge of the sound. Wind drove rain through broken windows. The place seemed empty until Chloe spotted the open service door.

Inside, Oliver found Grace sitting on a bench with her hands tied. Maribel was beside her, conscious and furious.

“They hit me with a door,” Maribel said. “I hope they enjoyed the bruise.”

Grace looked at Oliver. “You came.”

“Of course I came.”

Elena cut the ties. “Who took you?”

“A man named Robert Kincaid,” Grace said. “He worked for Adrian.”

Chloe swore. “Kincaid died years ago.”

“Then he has been hiding well,” Grace replied.

A noise echoed from the upper walkway. Elena drew her weapon, but Oliver caught her arm.

“Wait.”

A figure appeared at the rail. It was an older man with a scar across his cheek and a tired face.

“Peter Parker asked me to keep Grace alive,” he said.

Oliver stopped breathing.

“You knew my father?”

“I helped him disappear.”

Grace stepped between them. “Robert, you were supposed to stay away.”

“The boy has a right to know.”

Robert descended slowly. He explained that Peter had not died in an accident. He had been attacked after finding proof that money was being diverted from Vale Meridian through a network controlled by Sebastian's adviser, Lionel Voss.

“Adrian wanted to expose Voss,” Robert said. “But Voss had proof that Adrian had covered up an earlier fraud. They threatened Naomi and the children.”

Elena stared at him. “My mother?”

“Naomi was the one who found the transfers. She planned to take them to the authorities.”

“Why didn't she?”

Grace answered. “Because someone told her Elena would be killed if she spoke.”

“Who?”

Robert looked at Grace.

Grace closed her eyes. “I did.”

Oliver stared at his mother. “You threatened her?”

“No. I believed the threat. I begged her to wait.”

“And she died.”

“She died believing silence would protect you.”

Elena's face was rigid, but tears shone in her eyes. “My mother left because of this.”

“She left to find proof,” Robert said. “She was killed before she could return.”

The truth struck Elena with such force that Oliver reached for her. She let him take her hand.

Robert gave Chloe a brass key. “Adrian hid the final record in Aurelia. He trusted no one but the staff there.”

“Why tell us now?” Oliver asked.

Robert looked toward the dark water. “Because Voss found me yesterday.”

A gunshot shattered the windows.

Everyone dropped. Elena pulled Oliver behind a concrete pillar. Chloe dragged Grace toward the service exit. Robert remained on the walkway, staring at the far shore.

“Run,” he said.

Another shot rang out. Robert fell from the rail into the black water below.

Oliver reached the opening, but there was nothing to see except widening circles in the rain.

Elena gripped his shoulder. “We have to go.”

“He knew the truth.”

“And he gave it to us.”

In the car, Chloe examined the brass key. Tiny letters had been etched along its edge.

AURELIA, PRIVATE ROOM SEVEN.
