Chapter 16 - The Gala of Broken Crowns

Three weeks later, Sebastian Vale was arrested on charges related to fraud, obstruction, and conspiracy. Lionel Voss disappeared before investigators reached his home.

Elena resigned publicly and transferred her voting shares into an independent trust overseen by employees, outside directors, and Chloe. The move cost her billions in control.

“You gave away the kingdom,” Chloe told her.

“It was never a kingdom,” Elena said. “It was a company with too many servants and not enough adults.”

The annual Vale Foundation gala continued despite the scandal. The new board wanted to show stability. Elena wanted to cancel it. Chloe insisted the foundation's food programs could not lose another donation cycle.

Oliver attended as an independent investigator, not as Elena's date.

They had seen each other only twice since he left her apartment. Each meeting had been brief, polite, and unbearable.

At the gala, Elena wore a green dress and no family jewels. When she stepped onto the stage, the room quieted.

“For years, this foundation used generosity to make the Vale name look cleaner than it was,” she said. “That ends tonight. Every account will be audited publicly. Every director will disclose conflicts. If the result is that the Vale name disappears, then it should.”

Applause began slowly, then grew.

A waiter approached Oliver with a glass of water. “Ms. Vale asked me to give you this.”

Under the glass was a folded napkin. Inside, Elena had written: I DIDN'T ASK YOU TO COME. I'M GLAD YOU DID.

He found her in the conservatory.

“That was brave,” he said.

“It was terrifying.”

“Good.”

She smiled. “You always say the nicest things.”

“I am trying to maintain my reputation.”

The moment between them softened until a crash sounded from the ballroom.

The screens behind the stage had changed. Adrian's confession played before hundreds of guests and a wall of cameras. Voss had hijacked the gala's broadcast system.

“If you want the truth,” Voss said from the recording, “you should hear all of it.”

A second video began. It showed Elena entering Oliver's apartment building months earlier. It showed her investigator reviewing his work, then Jessica meeting with Vale security.

The audience murmured.

Voss's voice continued. “Elena Vale built her fortune by manipulating people. Oliver Parker was merely the latest.”

Oliver felt the old humiliation return, sharper because it was public.

Elena stepped toward the stage. “He is right about one thing.”

She took the microphone. “I manipulated people. I hid information. I treated consent as an obstacle. Oliver Parker did not owe me his trust, and I did not deserve it.”

The room fell silent.

“But Voss is wrong about the ending,” Elena said. “Oliver chose to investigate. He chose to testify. He chose to walk away. Those choices belong to him.”

Oliver watched her surrender the story instead of controlling it.

Chloe reached the control booth and shut down the feed. The police entered through the main doors.

Voss had not appeared in person. He had left one final message on the screen.

YOU CANNOT ARREST A GHOST.

Then another line replaced it.

UNLESS THE GHOST HAS A HOME.

May you like

Oliver recognized the address.

It was Grace Parker's house.
