Chapter 6 - A Seat at the Vale Table

Grace refused the assigned security team and chose a retired nurse named Maribel who carried pepper spray in her handbag and insulted anyone who called her old.

“If they want to kidnap me,” Maribel announced, “they can wait until after lunch.”

Oliver almost laughed. It was the first time in days.

Elena invited them to the Vale family residence that evening. Oliver expected marble and silence. He found both, along with a dining room long enough to host a board meeting.

Sebastian Vale sat at the head of the table. He was Elena's younger brother, handsome in a polished, bloodless way. Beside him sat Vivienne Vale, their grandmother, whose silver hair was braided like a crown.

Chloe occupied the nearest chair and had already stolen a dinner roll.

“The Parker family,” Sebastian said. “How nostalgic.”

Grace stiffened.

Elena took the seat beside Oliver. “You invited us.”

“I invited witnesses.”

“You invited an enemy,” Vivienne said to Grace.

Oliver looked at his mother. “What does she mean?”

Grace reached for her water. “Your father and Adrian disagreed about the company.”

“They did more than disagree,” Vivienne said. “Peter Parker threatened to expose us.”

Elena's hand tightened around her fork. “Enough.”

“You brought him here,” Vivienne replied. “He deserves the truth.”

Sebastian leaned toward Oliver. “Your father stole from Vale Meridian, then blamed my father when the money vanished.”

“The ledger shows the account was created after he died.”

“Ledgers can be manufactured.”

“So can signatures.”

Sebastian smiled without warmth. “You are sharper than Jessica described.”

The room went still.

Oliver turned to Elena. “What did Jessica tell you?”

Elena did not answer quickly enough.

“Nothing about your personal life,” she said. “She was interviewed by our security team months ago.”

“Why?”

“She applied for a contract position with Vale Meridian.”

“And you didn't think that mattered?”

“I didn't know you were dating her.”

“But you knew her.”

“Yes.”

He pushed back from the table. “I am done being the last person in every room to know the truth.”

Elena followed him into the hall.

“Oliver.”

“You said the attraction was real. Now I find out you knew Jessica and had security interview her.”

“The interview was routine.”

“Everything is routine to you until it ruins someone else's life.”

Her face went pale. “That is unfair.”

“Is it?”

For a moment, her controlled expression broke. “My father spent his entire life deciding what information people could survive. I grew up inside secrets. I am trying to keep you alive.”

“Then let me decide what I can survive.”

She looked away.

Chloe appeared at the end of the hall. “We have a problem.”

They followed her to the library. The security feed showed Grace's house. The front door stood open.

Maribel lay unconscious beside the sofa.

Grace was gone.

On the library desk, beneath a crystal paperweight, waited a handwritten note.
