Chapter 12 - Beneath the Lounge

The board meeting began at nine and ended before it started. Sebastian used emergency authority to postpone it after a security alert spread through the tower.

Someone had tried to burn the archive below Aurelia.

Oliver, Elena, and Chloe reached the basement through a service passage. Smoke curled beneath the steel door. The sprinkler system had failed, but a single server cabinet remained untouched.

“The fire was a distraction,” Oliver said.

Chloe pointed to the floor. “Someone stood here while the cameras were offline.”

The footprints led to the cabinet. Behind its cooling panel, Oliver found a second key card and a handwritten number matching the date on his father's watch.

He pressed the watch against the scanner. A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small memory chip.

Elena took a step toward it, then stopped. “You should open it.”

Oliver noticed the effort. She was letting him choose.

He inserted the chip into the console. A video appeared.

Adrian Vale sat at a desk, older and thinner than in the photographs. Grace stood behind him. Peter Parker was visible in the reflection of a dark window.

“If you are watching this,” Adrian said, “then the person we feared has found the archive.”

Peter stepped into view. “We have one chance to move the records.”

“No,” Grace said. “You have one chance to tell Elena.”

Adrian looked at her. “If Elena knows, she becomes a target.”

“She is already your daughter.”

“She is twenty-eight and believes power can solve anything.”

“Then teach her better.”

Adrian lowered his head. “I failed Naomi. I failed Peter. I will not fail Elena by handing her a war she cannot win.”

“You are not protecting her,” Grace said. “You are protecting your reputation.”

The recording paused briefly, then resumed from another angle.

Adrian was signing documents. The date was the night Peter died.

“I authorize the transfer,” Adrian said. “The account will be placed under Marisol's daughter, Chloe. Peter will remain the independent auditor. No one else is to know.”

Peter's voice came from off-camera. “What about Voss?”

“I will deal with him.”

“And Sebastian?”

Adrian's silence answered.

The video ended.

Chloe covered her mouth. Elena stared at the blank screen.

Oliver looked at Grace. “You were there.”

“I helped Peter move the records.”

“And when Peter died?”

“I hid the trust. I thought if I kept it buried, Voss would stop looking.”

Elena's voice was barely audible. “My father knew Sebastian was involved.”

“He suspected,” Grace said. “He never had proof.”

“But he protected him.”

“He protected the company.”

Elena turned to Oliver. “This is what I was raised to become.”

“You are not your father.”

“I have made the same choices.”

He wanted to say she had time to change. He knew wanting something did not make it true.

The basement door slammed shut above them.

The lights went out again.

Chloe's phone rang. Sebastian's voice came through the dark.

“Bring me the chip,” he said, “or the building's oxygen system stops in five minutes.”
