Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

The morning sun broke through the city fog, casting a pale golden light across the polished marble façade of the Grand Regency Hotel. Inside the ballroom, crystal chandeliers reflected the glow of hundreds of champagne glasses. Banners bearing the crest of Blackwood Manufacturing hung from the high ceilings, reading: A Century of Excellence, A Future of Growth.

Daniel Blackwood stood near the podium, wearing an Italian tailored suit, a glass of vintage champagne in his hand. Beside him, his father, Richard, beamed with pride, adjusting his gold cufflinks, while Patricia conversed with the wives of prominent city council members, showing off a three-carat diamond ring.

"To the future of Blackwood," Richard said, clinking his glass against Daniel's. "I have to admit, son, I had my doubts when you married that gray mouse. But getting her to sign over Clara's shares without asking for a dime? Brilliant. Absolute perfection."

Daniel smirked, taking a sip of his drink. "She was weak, Dad. Give a woman like Evelyn a roof over her head and a few nice words every now and then, and she'll believe anything. Last night she tried to argue about her place at the table, so I put her out. She’s probably crying in some cheap motel room right now, too embarrassed to show her face."

Patricia chuckled, brushing a speck of dust off her velvet dress. "Good riddance. We can finally hire a real hostess for our events, someone with class and family standing, not a glorified secretary who spends all day staring at spreadsheets."

At that moment, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The room, filled with over two hundred shareholders, journalists, and corporate board members, suddenly fell quiet as a group of people walked in. Leading the entrance were four uniformed officers from the City Police Department, accompanied by Detective Marcus Vance. Beside them walked Maya Chen, carrying a sleek black briefcase.

And walking right next to Maya was me.

I wore a tailored navy blue suit that fitted with sharp precision. My hair was pulled back into an elegant, tight bun, exposing my face entirely. I hadn't covered the deep purple bruise on my left cheekbone or the small cut on my lip with makeup. I let the evidence of their brutality sit bare for everyone in that room to see.

Daniel’s glass froze halfway to his lips. Patricia gasped, clutching her husband's arm.

"What is she doing here?" Patricia hissed, her face contorting with disgust. "Daniel, call security! Get that woman out of here before she embarrasses us!"

Daniel snapped out of his shock and marched down the center aisle toward me, his face red with anger. "Evelyn! Have you completely lost your mind? How dare you show up here looking like a beat-up vagrant? Get the hell out before I have you thrown—"

"Step back, Mr. Blackwood," Detective Vance interrupted, placing a firm, gloved hand on Daniel’s chest, pushing him back two steps.

"Detective, this is a private corporate event!" Richard shouted, hurrying over with his legal counsel following closely behind. "You have no right to disrupt our annual meeting! This woman is my son's wife, and whatever domestic dispute they have should be handled at home!"

"This is no longer a domestic dispute, Mr. Blackwood," Maya Chen announced, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. The journalists in the front row quickly raised their cameras, flashes beginning to pop like strobe lights.

"What are you talking about?" Daniel sneered, looking past the detective to glare at me. "She signed over her voting rights last night! She has no standing in this company! I hold 52% of the voting shares through the Clara Trust!"

"You hold nothing, Daniel," I said, stepping forward. My voice did not shake. For three years I had spoken in whispers in their house; today, my voice commanded the room. "The documents you forced into my study were unsigned drafts. The executed trust agreement, verified by the Delaware Chancery Court, explicitly states that the 52% voting block remains exclusively in my name until my death or voluntary legal transfer in front of a court-appointed magistrate."

A murmur rippled through the crowd of shareholders. Board members began whispering frantically to one another.

"That's a lie!" Daniel shouted, his composure cracking. "I signed the deal with Apex Capital last night! The wire transfer is processing!"

"And that bring us to the second matter," Maya said calmly, pulling a stack of legal documents from her briefcase and handing them directly to the Chairman of the Board, who was standing nearby with an open mouth. "These are certified forensic accounting records, co-signed by the Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Over the past six months, Daniel Blackwood has systematically embezzled $12.8 million from the Blackwood Manufacturing Employee Pension Trust."

The room erupted into chaos. Several union representatives sitting in the audience jumped to their feet, shouting in rage.

"That's impossible!" Richard roared, turning pale. "Our books are clean! Our accountants—"

"Your accountants were fed falsified ledgers created by your son," I said, looking Richard dead in the eye. "Ledgers I spent the last three weeks reconstructing. Every dollar stolen was routed through shell companies to pay off Daniel's personal stock debts and to finance your luxury estate in Oakridge."

Daniel turned to look at his father, his eyes wide with rising terror. "Dad... Dad, she's bluffing! She doesn't know how to do that! She's just a housewife!"

"I am a Senior Forensic Specialist certified by the International Association of Financial Crimes," I said, taking a step closer to him. "I was calculating corporate fraud before I was stupid enough to believe your promises of a family, Daniel."

Detective Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Daniel Blackwood, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, pension embezzlement, and felony domestic assault."

"Assault?!" Patricia shrieked. "She fell! She's lying! She slid on the porch because she was drunk!"

Maya reached into her pocket, pulled out a small tablet, and hit play. A high-definition video projected directly onto the large presentation screens hanging above the stage—screens that were meant to display the company's annual financial reports.

The entire room watched in horrified silence as the video played: Daniel grabbing my hair, dragging me across the marble floor, his mother drinking wine and laughing, his father chuckling, and Daniel flinging me into the rain like garbage.

The flashbulbs of the press became a blinding storm. Camera crews from local news stations, invited by Daniel to document his "triumph," were now broadcasting the scene live to thousands of homes across the state.

"No... turn it off! Turn it off!" Patricia screamed, covering her face with her hands as she realized every camera in the city was aimed at her.

"Daniel Blackwood, put your hands behind your back," Detective Vance ordered sternly.

Daniel backed away, his face pale, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked at the board members who had once praised him; they all turned their backs on him. He looked at his father, who was slumping into a chair, clutching his chest in shock. Finally, he looked at me.

"Evelyn... please," Daniel whimpered, his voice cracking as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "We're family. We can talk about this. I was drunk... I was stressed! Please, tell them to stop!"

May you like

I looked down at the man who had dragged me by my hair twelve hours ago, the man who thought I was nothing without him.

"A useless wife doesn't deserve a seat at your table," I said softly, repeating the exact words he had spat at me in the rain. "So I decided to take the table."
