Chapter 19 - THE NEW OWNER

Ten years after Daniel's arrest, I announced my final retirement from Blackwood Industries.

Maya was the first person I told.

“You're serious?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“End of the year.”

She stared.

“What will you do?”

“Nothing.”

She laughed.

“You don't know how to do nothing.”

“Then I'll learn.”

The board had already chosen my successor.

Not a family member.

Not a politician.

Not an old-money investor.

A woman named Sophia Bennett.

She had started at Blackwood as a junior engineer.

Then she became plant manager.

Then chief operating officer.

She understood the company from the bottom up.

When the board announced her promotion, the employees cheered.

I stood beside her.

She looked nervous.

“You ready?”

“No.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

She laughed.

“Why good?”

“Anyone who thinks they're completely ready for this job is dangerous.”

She smiled.

“I'll remember that.”

My final speech was short.

I didn't talk about profits.

Or revenue.

Or market share.

I talked about people.

“This company almost died because too many people believed control mattered more than trust.”

“We changed that.”

“Today, Blackwood is stronger because nobody owns its soul.”

I looked at the workers.

“The company belongs to everyone who contributes to it.”

Then I stepped away.

The applause lasted several minutes.

When I left the stage, Maya hugged me.

“That's really it.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

We walked outside.

The factory was operating behind us.

Machines were running.

Workers were laughing.

Trucks were leaving the loading docks.

It was beautiful.

I looked back once.

Then forward.

For the first time, I had no corporate crisis waiting.

No board meeting.

No hidden ledger.

No legal emergency.

Just a future.

May you like

My own.

And I was ready.
